Apparently the Mayor of Alice Springs, a central Australian city, thinks a month's stay by the riot squad should be sufficient to put fear into the hearts of some unruly youth who are making things unpleasant for the locals. One wonders where the local police are but then there are always motorists to prey on.
This is a new phase in dealing with disadvantaged youth and the aboriginal community and while we all think strong measures are necessary to curb urban troublemaking, particularly from the aboriginal community who are the only group that behaves like this, surely a campaign of fear will not curb but escalate urban violence. What is probally needed is to round this lot up and send them back to their communities.
How do other communities deal with this, some constructive suggestions please? |
Clarification/Follow-up by paraclete on 11/12/08 9:07 pm: Hi Tom
I don't think removal is practical where would we remove them to; Arnheim Land?, they are the wrong tribe; wouldn't be welcome there. No unfortunately they belong in central Australia, obviously we have tried assimulation but it hasn't worked, they don't share the value system of the broader community. The aboriginal community is underrepresented in all groups in broader population excepting the prison population, disadvantage, alcoholism, unemployment, health problems and our intervention hasn't done much to change this.
As far as your assertion that the Cronulla riot proves anything about other groups, it does not. I see that in the context of the unrest existing in other places at the time. Australia wasn't the only place to experience such outbreaks, but Alice is different, we see this sort of thing in other places; Redfern, Dubbo, etc too although the answer applied is like your answer; disperse the troublemakers into other communities so that the trouble is multiplied, it doesn't do anything to solve the problem. There is no homeland to send them too, no vacant land they could exist on. Aboriginal Australia is tribal and like it or not outsiders arn't welcome
