Reward offered to dispute climate report

A RIGHT right-wing American think-tank is offering $US10,000 ($12,940) to scientists and economists to dispute a climate change report set to be released in Paris later today by the UN's top scientific panel.
The Guardian newspaper reported today that the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) sent letters to scientists in the United States, Britain and elsewhere offering the payments in exchange for articles emphasising the shortcoming of the UN's report.
AEI, which the paper said receives funding from oil giant ExxonMobil, also reportedly offered additional payments, and to reimburse travel expenses.
The UN report, due to be released today in Paris by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC), is likely to give a bleak assessment of the damage to the future of the environment.
It is the culmination of four days of debate between more then 500 scientists at a closed-door meeting in Paris, who have been poring over the first review of the scientific evidence for global warming in six years.
AEI's letters characterise the IPCC report as "resistant to reasonable criticism and dissent and prone to summary conclusions that are poorly supported by the analytical work" and request articles that "thoughtfully explore the limitations of climate model outputs," The Guardian said.
Kenneth Green, the AEI visiting scholar who sent the letters, confirmed to The Guardian that the think-tank had approached scientists and analysts to pen essays that would be compiled into an independent review of the IPCC's report.
"Right now, the whole debate is polarised," Mr Green was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
"One group says that anyone with any doubts whatsoever are deniers and the other group is saying that anyone who wants to take action is alarmist. We don't think that approach has a lot of utility for intelligent policy."

LONDON (AFP) - The government has welcomed a UN report on global warming as highlighting the real threat posed by climate change, and warned of a "closing window of opportunity" for taking action.

"There is an urgent need for the international debate on climate change to move beyond 'them and us' and recognise the world's shared dilemma," Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett said Friday.
Environment Secretary David Miliband added: "This report confirms our concerns that the window of opportunity to avoid dangerous climate change is closing more quickly than previously thought.
"It is another nail in the coffin of the climate change deniers and represents the most authoritative picture to date, showing that the debate over the science of climate change is well and truly over."
United Nations scientists meeting in Paris warned Friday that fossil fuel pollution would raise temperatures this century, worsen floods, droughts and hurricanes and melt polar sea ice.
The report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) -- the UN's paramount scientific authority on climate change -- confirms the problem "is worse and more urgent than had been previously understood," Beckett said.
"Failure to grow our economies will threaten peace and prosperity, but if we grow our economies at the expense of the climate, the same peace and prosperity will be threatened," she said in a statement.
She said she was glad that new UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon "has focused so quickly on the wide-ranging importance of climate security," adding it was of concern to the United Nations as a whole not just its environmental bodies.
"We will be working to build political ambition throughout the UN in the coming months," Beckett said.
"As Britain has long recognised, if we wait for others to make the first move we all lose."

Agar has the same problem with me that Laura Ingraham had ....the time slot. Now that Laura is on delay at the 10 PM -1 AM slot I record her program and listen to it in the eary morning rather than George Snory 's Coast to Coast.
But I am getting impatient waiting for John Batchelor to start broadcasting again (he is currently at the Hoover Institute and doing weekly commentary at the NY Sun). I doubt he will come back to the ABC Network (rumor has it that the management was getting negative feed back because he was hammering Rudy Guiliani ) . But he may end up on satellite or a different station .
