That darn global warming Itsdb 11/30/06
    Hurricane season ends quietly

    By JESSICA GRESKO Associated Press Writer
    © 2006 The Associated Press

    MIAMI — The mild 2006 Atlantic hurricane season draws to a close Thursday without a single hurricane striking the United States - a stark contrast to the record-breaking 2005 season that killed more than 1,500 people and left thousands homeless along the Gulf Coast.

    Nine named storms and five hurricanes formed this season, and just two of the hurricanes were considered major. That is considered a near-normal season and well short of the rough season government scientists had forecast.

    "We got a much-welcome break after a lot of the coast had been compromised in the last several years, but this is a one-season type break," said Gerry Bell, lead seasonal hurricane forecaster for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

    In May, scientists predicted 13 to 16 named storms and eight to 10 hurricanes, with four to six of them major.

    The 2005 hurricane season was the busiest on record, with 28 named storms, including 15 hurricanes, four of which hit the United States, including Katrina and Rita.

    Bell urged people not to become complacent about the next season, which starts June 1. Forecasters say the Atlantic is still in an active hurricane period that began in 1995 and could last another decade or more.

    This year, a warm-water trend known as El Nino developed more quickly than expected in the Pacific, squashing the formation of storms in the Atlantic and creating crosswinds that can rip hurricanes apart. At the same time, upper-level air currents pushed most hurricanes out to sea, away from the U.S. mainland.

    Only two storms, Tropical Storms Alberto and Ernesto, hit the U.S. mainland in 2006. Neither caused significant damage.

    The season effectively ended with Hurricane Isaac, the last named storm, which dissipated Oct. 2.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    It was just April when experts predicted 2006 will have about nine hurricanes (average is 5.9); 17 named storms (average is 9.6), 85 named storm days (average is 49.1); 45 hurricane days (average is 24.5); 5 intense (Category 3-4-5) hurricanes (average is 2.3) and 13 intense hurricane days (average is 5.0).
    The probability of U.S. major hurricane landfall is estimated to be about 55 percent above average.
    I guess they missed that one. Btw, here in Amarillo, TX we have 7 inches of snow on the ground, it's about 18 degrees, the wind chill last night was 15 below zero. it was predicted we would receive a 'light dusting.'
    With all those incorrect predictions, especially the 'sky is falling' predictions on the 2006 hurricane season, what makes any of these global warming 'experts' think they can predict this alleged threat?
      It reminds me of a little kid who didn't get what he was promissed for his birthday"
      "But, Mommy, the computer models SAID so..."
      The thing about computer models is "garbage in, garbage out". The computer models with which they make these predictions are so full of assumptions that they amount to little more than WAGs (wild-assed guesses). Fact is, we don't know enough about how weather works in the long-term to make accurate assumptions, and because of that the computer models are innacurate by their very nature.
      Steve the way Eli is tossing the rock a good stiff breeze could only improve his accuracy .
      Clarification/Follow-up by Itsdb on 11/30/06 5:14 pm:
      No hard feelings tom, but I hope Eli keeps throwing duds for another week or so :)
      And the Romo-mentum continues...albeit not the prettiest of games. :)
      4th and inches ,and a 280 lb. monster in the backfield .so what do the gnats do ? push the line ?no ;of course not ;they'd rather finesse and run a sweep !!
      I knew when they tied the game that there was enough time left to lose it and that they would find a way to do just that .
      How does a tight end get so wide open so far down field ?
      this Giant team is a heart breaker. It was one thing to root for them when they were legit bad in the 1970s ,but this team revels in self destruction and outright stupid play . it's very hard to watch .
      The mark of a good QB is finding a way to win at the end of games . Romo looks like he's got it .....Not Staubach yet... but showing signs .
      tom, I had to wonder about that one, too. Granted, Jason Ferguson is a monster in the middle - he drew 3 blockers at times - but with the season on the line no way would I have not run a horse like Jacobs straight ahead.
      I sympathize with you though, Jerry Jones has had his share of boneheaded personnel moves and watching the Boys the past 6 years or so has been about as fun as dental work. Unless you're watching the cheerleaders...
      How does a tight end get so wide open so far down field you ask? Looks like he just ran right past them :)
      looks like the Eagles did the gnats a favor . I hear die hards on NY radio saying that last year the Steelers were 7-6 and then went on a run to the Super Bowl . Hey ! gotta hang your hat on something I guess.
      Clarification/Follow-up by Itsdb on 12/05/06 3:05 pm:
      Wish I could hang my hat on a fantasy player. Finally decided to start Joseph Addai after his 44 point week last time out - 6 points this week. I missed Marques Colston being declared inactive at the last minute last week and missed out on Devery Henderson's big day - this week I caught it and Henderson scored 1 point. Gotta love it.
      Clarification/Follow-up by tomder55 on 12/05/06 3:36 pm:
      lol I have a total of 3 winning weeks . I benched Trent Green in favor of Pennington and Green went wild . The only player I have who has been a consistent performer is Chi. kicker Gould . It is going to be tougher to rely on RBs because most teams are opting for situational backs over feature backs . Tiki Barber has had a great year(1170 yds ) but has only scored a couple of touchdowns so his value falls alot less than Marion Barber (568 yds ). There are precious few LTs in the league .I've had Willie Parker all year but his production has not compensated for the lack of production in other places (note my QB options . )
      Clarification/Follow-up by Itsdb on 12/05/06 4:46 pm:
      I can't complain too much. I have 2 teams, one is leading the division and the other is in second so I need a win this week. But get this, when Green went down I picked him up on both teams and sat on him - Bulger and Peyton were doing fantastic at the time. I played Huard the one week he tanked and I dropped Green last week.
      My only steady runner was Ronnie Brown - until he broke his hand. Cadillac has been a dud, nobody knows which Bell to start for Denver (I've managed to start Mike only on his off weeks), Addai is up and down, Travis Henry went wild but nowhere when I started him, you never know which week to give DeAngelo Williams a chance (it was this week and I missed it) and only God knows what to do with a Jets RB. And I need to learn to never, ever listen to the experts, lol.
      Maybe next season we need to get the Answerway gang to go head to head in our own league.
