Grounds for Impeachment-Brzezinski jackreade 04/25/06
"In an op-ed titled “Do Not Attack Iran,” former National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski today makes the case against launching an air strike on Iranian nuclear facilities. First on his list:

In the absence of an imminent threat (with the Iranians at least several years away from having a nuclear arsenal), the attack would be a unilateral act of war. If undertaken without formal Congressional declaration, it would be unconstitutional and merit the impeachment of the President.

Most strikingly, Brzezinski wonders whether the Bush administration’s current strategy is actually designed to “deliberately encourag[e] greater Iranian intransigence” and undercut chances of reaching a diplomatic solution:

How else to explain the current U.S. “negotiating” stance: the United States is refusing to participate in the on-going negotiations with Iran but insists on dealing only through proxies. That stands in sharp contrast with the simultaneous negotiations with North Korea, in which the United States is actively engaged.

At the same time, the United States is allocating funds for the destabilization of the Iranian regime and is reportedly injecting Special Forces teams into Iran to stir up non-Iranian ethnic minorities in order to fragment the Iranian state (in the name of democratization!).

Brzezinski is the latest in a long line of national security experts and others advising against a military strike in Iran. (Read our full list HERE.) But Brzezinski also makes a strong proactive case on Iran, calling for the Bush administration to “sober up, to think strategically, with a historic perspective and with America’s national interest primarily in mind.”

Jack, I have to say that I think your nuclear expert is wrong about this.

Iran already has long range missile systems. They have been working on adapting these missiles to carry a nuclear payload, and according to my sources in Israeli intelligence, they are nearly there. Furthermore, they don't need long-range missiles to reach Israel... they can do it with their medium-range missiles right now.

Iran has already managed to enrich uranium. It is only a matter of time (months by the rekoning of most experts) until they can enrich the uranium to weapons-grade levels.

Iran has some of the USA's old nuclear technology, thanks to a really bad mistake by Clinton, so building the warhead once they have the material won't be hard.

Iran has stated its intent to sell this technology to the Sudanese, and there is no reason to believe that they are lying.

In short, Iran is a nuclear threat TODAY. Ad every day we wait is one more day that they become a BIGGER nuclear threat.

It is not Bush who is courting war here, but rather Ahmadinejad. He is the one set on the path to war, and he is hoping to get the first strike in unopposed. And if we continue sitting on our hands with our thumbs up our butts, he'll manage to do it.

Elliot, I can't recreate his statements, so I can't debate with you. I am convinced that Iran is not a nuclear threat to us or Israel, and won't be for years.

Is the issue here delivery or actaully obtaining a nuclear weapon . They have already tested MIRV rockets with workable range to London (the the Shahab-5 still in development ). Prior to that they already had intemediate range missles(the Shahab-3) capable of hitting Tel Aviv .

As far as how far their nuke program has advanced . Well lets just wait to the IAEA report due out on Friday . It is my understanding that Director General Mohamed ElBaradei is not a happy camper because the Iranians hid from the IAEA that they had obtained workable blue prints of a nuclear bomb from the AQ Khan network . In early March of last year Pakistan acknowledged A. Q. Khan had provided centrifuges to Iran, though it denied having had any knowledge of the transactions.ElBaradei met with the Iranians earlier this month .Ahmadinejad announced that Iran was working on the more efficient P2 version of uranium centrifuges and, to those who are angry at Iran’s clandestine nuclear program, he offered an unveiled, defiant response. “Our answer to those who are angry about Iran obtaining the full nuclear cycle is one phrase. We say, be angry and die of this anger.” It has already been confirmed that they have enriched uranium. If they get enough of those centerfuges whirling then they will be able to enrich their uranium to 90% U-235... then they will have weapons grade material in short order .

This week was Holocaust Remembrance Day .Here is something else to remember . In 1936 Hitler's Germany was not much of a threat .Yet Hitler boldly announced his intentions. Within 3 years he had amassed enough strength to enable him to defeat most of continental Europe. At what point do we need to take Ahmadinejad and his threats seriously ?
