US deploys elite forces worldwide to spearhead terrorism battle

    April 24, 2006

WASHINGTON: The US Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, has approved the military's most ambitious plan to fight terrorism around the world and retaliate more rapidly and decisively in the case of a terrorist attack on the US, according to defence officials.

The long-awaited campaign plan for the global war on terrorism, as well as two subordinate plans also approved within the past month by Mr Rumsfeld, are considered the Pentagon's highest priority, according to officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The plans envisage a greatly expanded role for the military - and in particular a growing force of elite special operations troops - to combat terrorism outside of war zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan.

Developed over about three years by the Special Operations Command, they reflect a beefing up of the Pentagon's involvement in domains traditionally handled by the CIA and State Department.

For example, the command has dispatched small teams of special operations troops to US embassies in more than a dozen countries in the Middle East, Asia and Latin America, where they do operational planning and intelligence.

And in a subtle but important shift, the Pentagon gained the leeway to inform - rather than gain the approval of - the US ambassador before conducting operations in a foreign country.

The plans cover a wide range of military activities - from man-hunting and intelligence gathering on terrorist networks, to attacks on terrorist training camps and recruiting efforts, to partnering with foreign militaries to eliminate terrorist sanctuaries.

Together, they amount to a road map to conduct what the Pentagon now envisages as a "long war" against terrorism.

The Pentagon declined to comment on the plans.

    ■ The CIA has sacked a senior intelligence officer for leaking information about overseas prisons operated by the agency. A lie detector test on Mary McCarthy following a leak last November showed the possibility of deception, government officials said, and she later admitted speaking to reporters. The agency fired Ms McCarthy last Thursday.

No this one is headed for Darwin. Darwin was wipped out by a similar storm in 1975. I once worked with a man who went through it, not nice.

I AM PRAYING FOR THOSE PEOPLE AND PLEASE DO THE SAME.

I was referring to the popular movies of the same name, ready response forces ignoring national borders and so on.

BTW ;why is Australia intervening in Soloman Is. internal affairs by occupying Guadalcanal ?

      Clarification/Follow-up by paraclete on 04/24/06 11:54 pm:
Australia is there by invitation. The Solomon's is what we describe as a failed state, There are a number in the Pacific that are propped up by Australia because it doesn't want failed states on it's door step, they represent an opportunity for terrorists to infiltrate. These nations have failed to arrive at nationhood, they were given their independence too early and so cannot govern themselves in a national sense. The chinese population appearently need protecting and the AFP is helping and training local law enforcement. What you see as interference is effective law enforcement. Think about Iraq on a small scale and wish that Australian methods could be used there.

Australia is not doing this unilaterally, it is part of a Pacific nations force.

      Hi,
In favor of an undeclared war on any country? No, I'm not in favor of that.
I am in favor of finding Bin Ladden, and if it takes an "elite" force to do that, then do it.
If it takes an elite force to stop drugs from coming into American, then do it.

put the shoe on the other foot, if it takes an elite force to stop america then do it. You see this sort of thinking, end justifies the means, is a two edged sword. You want to stop drugs, get serious about border enforcement, get serious about education, get serious about unemployment, get serious about your social issues. You want to find bin Laden, get serious about intelligence, get serious about helping muslim countries, not destroying them. You want a war send your elite force into any country

Do you live in the United States? Do you vote in National Elections?
Border enforcement is a National Disgrace, as all know; not enough funding and personnel.
Education Federal Funding is being cut, as we speak; for funding Iraq.
Umployment is higher than in previous years, due to jobs only paying $8 an hour, and those jobs can't support a family.
Helping Muslim Countries? We can't even help ourselves here at home.
Who is serious? Follow the politicians, if you can vote, this Fall.
