Vacation... Yiddishkeit 09/07/05
You are the President of the US! It's August 28th and Louisiana has been declared a State of Emergency, you now?

    A) Put a halt to your vacation plans and focus on the disastrous effect of Hurricane Katrina.

    OR

    B) Give a speech about the Iraqi war campaign, keep strumming your guitar, then end the vacation days later on August 31st.

*Today my local news (Las Vegas) was reporting that Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada is considering opening an investigation as to our President's chosen vacation itinerancy.

Oh! I know what you are recalling now about the move! Yes...I sold my home and did move from the west part of Las Vegas to the far east side of Las Vegas...which is actually a city in itself called Henderson. Henderson is just outside of Las Vegas though outsiders would not be able to tell the difference, it's a suburb. You have a good memory!

Bush's response came after the local gov'ts alert

Correct . that is the way it works and should work . It is scary to think that so many people think it ok for the Federal Government to use troops on US soil without local authorization .Anyway you slice and dice this it was incumbent of the locals to take the lead. As far as vacations go ;I think a Presidential vacation where he wakes up reading national security briefings and still makes executive decisions is not the same as a vacation where I go to Vegas and play black jack and see Circ du Sole.

      Bobby,

The evacuation began on the 27th. "Mandatory" evacuation began on the 28th at 10:00 A.M. Katrina made landfall at 7:00 A.M. on the 29th. Sounds like there was plenty of time to start them up and make use of them if someone in New Orleans would have issued the order.

      Tom and for general info-

One misunderstanding as to the timelines, though not anyones fault other than the media blunder. The Post and Newsweek had mistakenly reported Gov. Blanco declaring a State of Emergency on the 28th (I've seen in Tom's comments he mentions the 28th)...when in fact it was declared by Blanco on the 26th. The Post has corrected their error, however Newsweek has chosen only to correct one other error in their article but still has not corrected this particular mistake. I know a few of the adament diehard Bush supporters here are more than willing to defend the President until their own death, but I prefer to hear from less PR defense as I attempt to wade through the BS of the political spin...though I realize that may be wishful thinking.
