Ex ;Why would the jihadists be fighting so hard to prevent this if what the Iraqis are forging is an alliance with the al-qaeda sponsors ?

Hello tom:
The jihadists are hooking up with the dissafected Sunni's. I don't think Al Quida has much to do with it.

al Qaeda is basically an extremist Sunni Arab religious organization.
The constitutional debate itself has provided the catalyst for the emergence of a new Sunni Arab political consciousness, as has been evident in the reports of large-scale registration of Sunni voters .As the Sunnis develop a political presence they will be less inclined to ally themselves with the jihadi invaders .They didn't mind when Zarqwai was butchering Shia to keep them from voting, but I suspect their opinion will change when he is killing Sunnis trying to vote.

what use is a constitution if the people won't agree to it.
with all due respect , it has taken Australia a long time to ween itself off the queen's nipple . The Constitutional convention of 1998 carried even though only 77 of the 152 delegates (less than half) voted in favour of the resolution and the vote the following year but the subsequent resolutions for clean break were defeated .
The process is a continuous one. If this constitution is rejected it will not be the end of the world .In fact I do not see the point to all the arbitray deadlines. On the contrary ;I think they hinder the process because opposition knows they just have to ride it out until the deadlines.
