Perhaps if Ambassador Gillespie had been more confrontational with Saddam Hussien in 1990 ;and not been diplomatic in telling him that the US "has no opinion" on his border dispute with Kuwait;that maybe Saddam would not have invaded because he misinterpreted the mixed signals that diplospeak sometimes gives .
