Inauguration costs kindj 01/13/05
I'm seeing a lot of people complaining about the cost of the Bush inauguration. Something like 40 mil. OK, sure, that seems a bit extravagent to me, especially with all that's going on. If it were me, I'd just as soon take the oath, smile for the camera, make a short speech, and get back to the job I was being paid for.

But that's just me, and I'm no politician.

However, SURELY this is not the first inauguration that has come with a hefty price tag. Anyone have any figures for other Presidential inaugurations?

    DK

I wondered aloud if the oath was even necessary for a re-elected president. A response from someone that wondered aloud about the same idea said "maybe the oath expires" and has to be redone. So, change the oath to add that "I will uphold the ....as long as I hold the office of President of the US."

the whole body of the House of Representatives gets sworn in every 2 years even though most of the House members are incumbents.

party poopers ;there is nothing wrong with a little pomp .

of course a man of the people like Andy Jackson would never have such a ceremony .An 1897 Century Magazine article entitled, "Inauguration Scenes and Incidents"described his like this :

"Andrew Jackson's ceremony went smoothly but his post-inaugural celebration is legendary for the unruly mobs that swarmed the White House. In a letter to Martin Van Buren that uses some very disparaging (and objectionable) language, James Hamilton described the festivities as "a regular Saturnalia. The Mob broke in, in thousands...in one uninterrupted stream of mud & filth..."

The crowd became so rowdy that Jackson was forced to slip out of the White House secretly.
