Elliot,
Do you think the murder of the mother and her children impacted the Likud vote rejecting the Sharon Gaza Plan ? I think he should probably go ahead and start implementing it anyway. Seems to me that in a 2 State solution it would be near impossible to defend the settlements in Gaza anyway. Then again ,unilateral concessions have never reaped great results either .

I thnk that that murder did have SOME effect. But I think a bigger issue for him was the low turnout rate among non-settlers at the voing booths. The truth is that the Gaza plan has majority support within the rank and file of Likud. But only settlers who's settlements would be shut down turned out to vote. Sharon lost this vote because he didn't 'get out the vote'.
On the other hand, the vote is not binding, and Sharon is planning a national (all party) referendum on the Plan shortly. He'll win that one hands down because it has 70% support of the country, and THIS TIME he'll be sure to scrounge every vote he can.
I have certain problems with the plan. As a lifelong Religious Zionist and follower of Meir Kahane, I have issues with giving up ANY land. But I also understand the pragmatic needs of Israel also. The truth is that we cannot defend the Gaza settlements in a 2 state solution. And this plan also guarantees the future of the major West Bank settlements, and takes them off the table of future discussions. It also strengthens Israel's borders, and creates stiff penalties for breaching those borders. I am saddened that Israel needs to give up any land, but frankly this plan is better than anything I've seen till now. And I trust Sharon enough to pull it off... or to kick the ass of any Muslim that tries to stop him. And it finalizes things... "this far and no further" will become Sharon's mantra.
