Hello Elliot:
>>>So then, by that definition, Germany was a quagmire, as was Japan... and for that matter France.<<<
Wow. So blind. After the big one, the Japanese and Germans were pacified immediately. We’re not “stuck” in Japan – never have been. And we were only “stuck” in Germany because of the Soviets, not because the Germans resisted occupation.
Apples and oranges. But, to one bent on blindly following GW, I guess it’s all grapes.

After we defeated the Germans and the Japanese in WWII, our leaders were not at all sure we could force democracy on them; they had martial pasts, dictators, blah blah blah.
However, both countries took to Democracy beyond our wildest hopes, and very quickly.

of course ,the difference here is that both Germany and Japan were totally defeated .Nobody to my recollection surrounded an enemy in WWII and then unilaterally initiated a cease fire .I for one believe that our enemies in Iraq need to be totally defeated .Most of the Iraqis do not support ,former Saddamites, radical punk clerics ,foreign insurgents from Syria,Iran,or al Qaeda terrorists .

Right on, Tom. We should either defeat (and I mean DEFEAT) them, or never have gone in.
Well, we never should have gone in, in any case, but once we did, we should have crushed them (and kept them crushed).
I tell you, it's like Viet Nam all over again. Our generals know how to defeat an enemy, but the politicians are running this war - not the generals.
