COUNTING $$$: HANK1 11/30/05

I've asked several young check-out clerks at a local Super Market to manually count my change back to me after adding up my purchases. None could. Back to the computer they went.

Why can't some of our young people count change?

    HANK

Because they don't have to, Hank.

In the UK, in the better shops (stores), the sales assistants (clerks) always count the change from the tendered after stating the total.

It is the American way not to do that, and any person who is not an American citizen had either do it the American way or go back where they came from!

But, there's worse.

When I pay for my items in a shop (store), I tell them that I do not have to pay sales tax because I am not enfranchised (don't get to vote).

I tell them that "Taxation without representation is tyranny," and that that was one of the main justifications the American (Colonial) Revolutionary War.

Blank stares all around ..........

Nonetheless, I always have to pay the tax,

It's all to do with the American Way, Hank. It doesn't have to make sense, but as long as someone has already done it, it becomes an integral part of American custom and culture that all immigrants (c'est moi!) have to submit to (genefluct) to avoid being called a traitor and being invited to leave.

Fortunatly for Americans and for America, my shoulders are broad, and my sense of humour is well developed, although it is sometimes too subtle for your fellow nationalists.

Remember that the Great American, Robert Hope, was an Englishman. I follow in his tradition, although without the same exposure.

Well, Hank, I done rambled to farr for too long and will leave you to polish your Titleists.

I wish you well, but when you start checking up on POS (point of sale) opereatives (clerks) it shows that you are getting to be an old codger.

Welcome to the club - a four iron, I believe!
