Moderate Americans Chouxxx 08/28/04
The vast number of Americans and American voters call themselves Moderates. When questioned in a recent survey, they labeled their positions as Moderate the policies enacted by the Liberals years ago. Such issues as the government's responsibility to protect citizens and others from pollution of all kinds, for example. The Liberal heritage is now the mainstay of the Moderate Americans, fully accepted and desired.

Depending on how you word survey questions, you can get any kind of results you want. I disagree with your premise. From surveys I have read, the vast majority of Americans live "conservative" lives, and believe in conservative values.

Policies enacted by Liberals "years ago," may in fact be conservative positions today, as the Ted Kennedys of the Democratic Party are so far Left, they would not be recognized by John F. Kennedy.

Look at what JFK and the Democrats wanted in the early 60s; tax cuts, a stronger national defense, and engagement with Communist forces wherever they arose.

Read tomorrow's (8/28/04) Sunday Chicago Tribune's Perspective section as to Presidential elections and Electoral College results when Republicans run as real "conservatives."

In the races when Conservatives (with a capital C) ran for President (1980, 1984, 1988) the Electoral College vote was 1,440-173.

In elections where a "moderate" Republican ran (including the victory in 2000), the vote has been 838-1,312.

This is not a "moderate" country. Stop trying to convince yourself that it is one.
