"Welcome back Mr. Jones . . . . " is a type of message that amazon displays when one has purchased books now how can it be decided if this is an invasion of privacy or good marketing mch like that of wen in a store & a credit card is used, the store manages to have a record of one's buying behaviour & also some companies sell their lists & some dont for one to start recieving catalogues!
What I want to know is where should the line be drawn & how is it fairly decided whether it is an invasion of privacy or just brilliant marketing?

Selling mailing lists is big business. I've always wondered how corporations, individuals and private enterprise in general are getting away with this INVASION OF PRIVACY! The government has lowered the boom on the Telecommunications people who used to call homes at all times ... day and evening ... trying to sell products! This, too, is an INVASION OF PRIVACY! We can now sign a 'no call' list that tells these companies not to call anymore! Why can't the government pass a law or two about mailing lists? Same difference! If you put a hiatus on the genesis of a problem, the 'offshooters' from 'that beginning' get 'shot down' like fish in a barrel. Nothing brilliant about that modus operandi, e.g. marketing! You just buy a name and then call or write to the person or company! Nothing to it! Mail order businesses are part of the problem because they need names to sign up members etc.
