What does "character" exactly mean when you say, "he's a character actor"? Characteristic?
I know what kind of an actor the speaker has in mind but I don't get really the meaning of the word.

I hesitate to disagree with schoolmarm on this, but the usual way "character actor" is meant is to describe a professional actor who generally does not appear in starring roles. Stars make more money, perhaps, but successful character actors can have long careers -- and the movies and theatre productions need these players just as much as they need the stars.
The Wikipedia article on "charactor actor" gives more details, though it seems to be a work-in-progress. |
