I don't quite get what color "olive" is when referred to people's skin. Could someone help me, please?

There's a wide variation in skin tone across peoples, determined mostly by the amount of melanin pigment. I've most often seen the term "olive-skinned" used by Northern European writers (and some Americans) to describe Southern Europeans from Italy, Greece, and other areas around the Mediterranean.
