One outlet circuit in my home is not working properly. When I plug a lamp into any for the sockets you can barely tell the light bulb is burning. In fact you would swear it wasn't. There is just enough juice coming through that the filament in the bulb burns red. Nothing wrong with the light bulb or lamp. Nothing else plugged into any of the outlets and the wall switches on the same circuit don't work either. What could be wrong? |

Because the wall switches are not working either, I would suspect a problem in the fuse or circuit breaker box, or in the wiring leading from that box to this room. It is also quite possible that one of the wires leading to these circuits is completely disconnected, and the circuit is being completed by way of a "sneak path" through another circuit. (This would most likely happen if there is a problem with the neutral wire.)
The hazard with this kind of bad connection is that it can lead to generation of heat, particularly inside walls, which can in turn cause a fire. I would strongly urge you to have a qualified electrician take a look at this problem as soon as possible. In the meantime, my recommendation is that you refrain from using these affected electrical circuits until they are repaired.
