Sunlight contains all the different colors of light mixed together in equal amounts, the full spectrum of light. Many artificial sources of light do not have all the color or in equal amounts. Ordinary light bulbs tend to be a little on the yellow side. Fluorescent light are more blue. Some artificial lights may appear white due to a balance of blue and yellow, but omit red. You may have noticed fabrics look different under fluorescent lights, regular lights, and the sun. This is due to the different levels of some colors of light.
For people with normal vision, the complete, balanced light is not as important as for those with impaired vision including those that developed macular degeneration with age.
Part of what I know about light and vision I learned visiting the dorm at a dog guide school. Most of the people there to learn to use their dog guide have some, but limited vision. The dorm is brightly lit with full spectrum light. Each room has an Ott-Lite reading lamp. Ott-Lites are one of several brands of full spectrum lights. Jo-Ann Fabrics sells them and perhaps other fabric stores too. I bought one for my own use on clearance Radio Shack. It also has a magnifier you can fold out. My vision is fairly good, but sometimes when I need to see fine details, I put something under my Ott-Lite.
Nothing lives up to its hype, but a bright, full spectrum light can make a big difference for those with any vision problems at all. Several companies are selling them. |
