bathroom fan mickeyrory 03/29/06
My basement bathroom is not convenient to an outside wall and given that all space under floor joists are filled with a pvc vent to my high efficiency furnace and two additional vents to supply oxygen to the room for the furnace and water heater I don't think I can run a fan vent outside. I'm wondering if there is an alternative to venting outside. Is it absolutely necessary that I install a fan in my new bathroom? Is this usually code or is it simply for the prevention of longterm damage from moisture?

My house has 3 bathrooms, and none of them has a fan. Of course, smells can be a problem. My house was built in 1970 under much looser codes. I think too many things that would be nice are now required by code. Will your project have to pass inspection? If so, you might talk to the inspector ahead of time.

Basements tend to be a little on the humid side anyhow. If you take a long, hot shower, it might take time to dissipate the moisture. Don't know if it would meet code or not, but what you could do is vent into the air INTAKE. When the furnace or hot water heater weren't running, the bad smells and moisture might work their way outside. If one was running, they would be drawn in along with the combustion air. Since the system is a condensing system, a little more moisture won't be the problem I suggested in my first answer.

Haven't seen anywhere on the net where you will get the quality of answers on general construction you will get here from Speedball1 on plumbing. The only thing I really know is dogs.
