Besides using their local Party organizations to work in the campaign, their main contribution was the funneling of legal and illegal contributions to Clinton's campaign.
"Soft" money prohibitions prevented donations to local party organizations from being used in the Clinton campaign. Illegal donations from entities like Enron (approx. $200,000) and the Communist Chinese Government ($300,000) were sent to local organizations and local politicians, and then "re-donated" or used for advertising directly to assist the Clinton campaign.
All of this is illegal and the Democratic Party had to give back, or pay fines that totaled somewhere up to 3 million dolars. However, since they won the election, they didn't mind. |
