Incontinent Anonymous 03/09/05
In your opinion, is it normal for a 50 yr old women, who is basically healthy without any medical condition to have incontinent with the bladder? She gets up now sometimes once in the night when she didn't have to. It's also harder to hold than it use to be.

She was taking some thermogenic (diet) capsules that had caffein (small amount) in it. She thought that could cause some of the problem because caffein can cause you to urinate more.

I've been told sugar subsitutes like twin and equal could possibly cause some problems in that area.

Any help or tips on the subject willl be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Hello Anonymous,

Incontinence is twice as common in women as men. Incontinence is treatable and often curable at all ages and usually results from an underlying medical condition. Often older women, who have had children, will experience problems with incontinence after damaging the pelvic floor muscles and or nerves that help to hold or release urine, during childbirth.

Exercises to strengthen or retrain pelvic floor muscles and sphincter muscles can reduce or cure leakage of urine.

It would be best to be evaluated by a doctor who is well acquainted with incontinence to learn the cause of your problem. I would think that caffine could aggravate problems with incontinence since it has a diuretic effect. I am not sure what effect sugar substitutes have on kidneys, bladder or incontinence.
