Hello, Henriaz.

This is my personal interpretation of the poem. You may find other writers' thoughts if you search www.dogpile.com for "A Wintry Sonnet by Christina Rossetti".

The sonnet uses personification in an allegorical way to say that at the depths of the worst of times, when we feel that all is lost and that we can't go on another day, brighter times are soon to come. The bad days will be forgotten in the sunilght of better ones. But the ocean, representing the basic life force of the planet, will continue to thirst for the energy that can never be replenished.
