| How many kinds of sales are there? |
chxq99 |

When I was a student, I was taught that the word "sales" is commonly referred to "a selling of goods at bargain prices". However, today when I walk in the shopping malls, there are many kinds of colorful sales, like "white sales", "pink sales", "blue sales" etc. Can any expert tell me their exact meanings or what are their differences?
Thank you.
Cheers, |

In the most general sense, "sales" refers to the selling of goods or the revenue generated by the selling of goods.
The type of "bargain sales" that your question refers to are a tactic used by sellers to keep buyers interested (and to gain information about elasticity of demand) -- by offering goods at lower-than-normal prices, retailers can increase the flow of customers to their stores. They can also be a tool to reduce excess inventories (without permanently lowering prices) and attract some price-sensitive customers away from their competitors.
As to naming the sales, a "white sale" was usually meant for selling the plainest (i.e. plain white) goods. From that, the marketing imagination can take free rein and invent sales in "pink", "blue" or whatever -- anything that will get you to walk through the door. |
