This is a very tough question to answer. Personally, Euthanasia to me is a form of suicide. When I watched my Dad go through cancer and watch helplessly as he went through one painful procedure after another, although it was hard to watch, I relished the fact that he had a strong will to live and with his attitude he was able to witstand even the painful local anesthetic procedure of testing his bone marrow for cancer. My father wanted to live although after 18 months he did succumb to it, it was he who decided it was time. However, on the other hand one of his best friends also died of cancer and his family's anguish and his was also hard to bear. I could understand his wife not wanting to see her husband go through all that pain, because he was constantly screaming from the pain, but he didn't want to die.

If Euthanasia becomes permissable by law, I think it would be dangerous for the patient if there isn't a living will that protects him/her. A family member may not be able to stomach the pain that the love one is going through and may decide to have euthanasia implemented. But, what if that patient didn't want to be put to death even with the pain there are those that will want to live as long as they can. Like in the two examples that I mentioned. If my brothers had there way, I think they would have chosen to not have to put my father through what he went through, but it was his choice and as was the choice of his friend.

I think a lot of times Euthanisia becomes a wonderful option when the fact is realized that one will become a burden to their family. I don't think anyone really wants to die, I think the love for family and not putting them through seeing what you will be going through is what makes euthanasia a choice that one thinks should be taken, a selfless act I suppose.

Should it be permitted, I don't think so. We are not given a choice when we are born, the pains of life can be overbearing more so when going through physical pain, but the circle of life means you bear the events that happens between birth and death.

Euthanasia being permitted by law also allows others to choose for you and in the wrong hands many would die whether it was their choice or not. Hence the reason why it has been such a great controversy since Dr. Kavorkian and of course the other's that copied him didn't make it less controversial when they took the matters into their own hands and started euthanisizing those that didn't ask for it.

I could go on and on, lol . . but this is a question that makes on really think. I think it would be a personal choice to make it legal would create many problems and gives the medical society a license to play God. Not all doctors are ethical and if given the opportunity they would offer euthanisia as a humane end. My Dad had several specialist, he was given less than 2 months after diagnosis. One doctor's bedside manner was so bad, he was never good at hiding his surprise that my Dad was still alive months after he told him he would survive only long enough to get his paperwork in order. It was sickening to see and it really didn't help my Dad, fortunately his oncologist had a zest for life and valued it as well.

This is just my opinion and I know that there are those that may feel differently, but, one needs to go through some experiences to realize that Euthanisia is not the answer. Life is precious no matter how unbearable the pain.

Best Wishes,
Island Angel
