Shoulder Surfing Ccl471 08/01/05
I understand that a lot of "white card" fraud is accomplished through "shoulder surfing" for ATM PIN numbers.

Ok, so a criminal can find out your PIN by "shoulder surfing," but would having your PIN be enough for them to get money out of your account?

Don't they also need the ATM card number printed on the front of your card? They can't find out that number by "shoulder surfing," so how do they get that number?

    Many thanks,

    C.L.

Most ATM machines no longer print the entire card number on the receipt, but there was a time when they did. People who carelessly disposed of their slips (or didn't remove them from the machine at all) -- and who let people see them enter their PIN -- would then have given the fraudsters the two pieces of information needed: a card number and a PIN. With those numbers, they are apparently able to use a card reader/writer to encode the magnetic stripe on a "white card" with the same information that's on the magnetic stripe on the victim's card -- and then access the account.
