Game plan: tile floor in kitchen
Currently the floor has sheet vinyl. I would like to tile it. The cabinets are of very low quality and the cut out for the dishwasher is nominal at best. If I build up the floor from 3/4 to the recommended 1 1/8 I won't have the clearance for the dishwasher (right now from the top of the vinyl to the bottom of the counter top is 34 1/2. If I add at least 5/8 substrate and the tile, I'm not sure if I'll get the dishwasher back in place. If I unscrew the lower cabinets from the wall at shim them up (or remove them all together and lay the substrate underneath this will rectify that problem).

Another problem arises if I decide to tile the counter top. Presently I have the standard 18 from the top of the counter top to the bottom of the upper cabinets. If I tile the counter top and raise the lower cabinets (to give me the needed clearance to get my dishwasher back in)I'll be down to a space of a little more then 16 inches (approximate).

What is 'acceptable' in this case? What would give me the best out come? Any and all suggestions and help would be appreciated.

    Thanx, Andy

Hi Andy,

The easiest wat to answer your question is to tell you to measure the distance in height of the dishwasher with the adjustable feet screwed all the way closed or screwed as short as possible.

This measurement will tell you the minimum amount of space that the dishwasher can use to slide in and out of the space provided for it.

If you remove the base cabinets altogether and put the underlayment over the entire floor you will solve the problem of the dishwasher but you will decrease the space from the countertop to the bottom of the wall cabinets by the thickness of the subflooring and the new tile floor.

current building codes call for an 18 inch clearance from the stove surface to the bottom of the wall cabinets to allow for proper space for the hood fan mounted over the stove top for proper ventalation purposes.

However I have used less in some cases.

If you use 1/2" BC grade plywood over your 3/4" current subflooring you will meet or exceed code standards for the subflooring.

I hope that this helps.

I wish you all the best, Van
