This is a late answer to an old question. Jim has done an excellent job of giving you some sources for exploring blogs and has defined the term accurately. I'm just adding this as further information.
A blog differs from a regular Web site in two important respects: (a) It is not divided into sections or "pages" like a traditional site; (b) therefore, each posting appears on top of all previous postings, so that entries run sequentially from the most recent back. Most blog hosts allow you to move an old entry up to the top position by altering its "date stamp," but that is as far as it goes. To some extent, you can enable viewers to navigate from one blog entry to another by building links, but you may need to use hypertext (html) code to do this.
Most bloggers set up blogs because they are much simpler to manage than full-scale Web sites are. I am, for example, decidedly not a whiz at computers, but I set up my blog at www.richturner.net in less than an hour (the host for the blog is www.xanga.com). After a bit of time working with the blog, I had acquired enough skills to deal with a full-scale site. Although I now work mostly with the site, I still find my blog useful for posting occasional comments and observations. |
