Slugging % describes how often a batter hits for extra bases (doubles, triples, homers).
Formula: Total # of bases for a hit/total # of at-bats
Calculation: To compute slugging percentage, first determine total bases for a hit. For example, singles count as 1 base, doubles as 2, triples as 3 and home runs as 4. Then divide the total bases by the number of at bats. Slugging percentage is calculated to 3 decimal places.
Analysis: Unlike batting averages, it is possible to have a slugging percentage of over 1.000. In fact, the highest slugging percentage possible is 4.000 which showed that a player batted once and hit a home run. A slugging percentage of over .400 means the batter is getting lots of doubles, triples and homers.

In other words, slugging percentage relates to a hitter's power, bottom line. Power hitters will always have a higher sluigging precentage than singles hitters. There is another adjusted stat that includes walks as well, since it is unfair for players like Bonds who get walked all the time. That is OPS. OPS stands for OBA plus SLG. OPS is an outstanding way to judge a player's value. There is also a high correlation between OPS and scoring runs and winning games.
Hope this helps. |
