The Cullinan diamond was the world's largest gem diamond, which weighed about 3,106 carats in rough form when found in 1905.

In February 2004 astronomers announced that they had found the largest known diamond in the universe. It is actually a white dwarf star about 50 light-years from the Earth in the constellation Centaurus. Technically known as BPM 37093 but more popularly called Lucy (after the Beatles' song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds) it has a 3000-kilometre-wide core of crystallised carbon, or diamond, with a mass of 2.27 thousand trillion trillion tonnes - that's 10 billion trillion trillion carats.
