Is Apple going to start putting Intel CPUs in their computers?
Yes, starting in 2006, as reflected in this announcement.
And will they be switching to Windows from their Mac OS?
No -- Apple plans to continue offering OS X in a version that runs on the Intel platform.
Because Apple makes money off of the hardware it sells, Apple is taking technical steps to block the use of OS X on garden-variety Intel PCs. It remains to be seen whether there will be widespread hacking of the Apple software to port it to such machines. At the same time, while Apple does not intend to support the use of Windows on the new Intel-based Apples, there is a fair likelihood that it will be possible to do.
Based on Intel's crappy architecture, I consider this a step backward, technically, but apparently the power consumption problems (as well, perhaps, as supply problems) with the IBM PowerPC chips drove the decision. |
