Ancient History
Working historical novelist, though degreed in English and not history. Ex-classics major in college, fluent in Latin, okay in Greek, some knowledge of other dead and useless languages as well. Longtime expert (frequently rated #1) in this category at AskMe before that site's lamented demise.
VERY well read in both the primary and secondary historical literature of the ancient world, most specifically Europe, Egypt and the Near East. I have a personal collection of works (in multiple languages) on the subject larger than those of some public libraries!
I would prefer public rather than private questions. Also, I will not do homework or write a paper for an asker, though I am happy to answer specific questions of fact or interpretation. |

Books & Literature
BA and MA in English, though as undergrad mostly majored in classics (Greek and Latin) and linguistics. VERY widely read, up on theory for the most part (though I react strongly against poststructuralism and deconstruction--so be warned!). If you like Harold Bloom's opinions (or Hazlitt's or Dr. Johnson's), then you should like mine. Specialties: general comparative literature in translation, ancient literatures from the Bible to Greek drama to epic poetry, belletristic history (Gibbon or Macaulay, for instance), Chaucer, Shakespeare, Jonson, Milton, Donne, Voltaire, Rabelais, philosophical writing from Plato to Bertrand Russell, some 19th and 20th century novels. Do NOT ask me about contemporary poetry, trendy fiction, or semiotics. Collector of classic works of fiction, histories, the humanities in general and belles lettres. Able to share my knowledge. Married to a librarian! Also, I will not write your paper or thesis for you, but I am happy to answer any specific question you may have. |

Classic Films
Avid fan and video/DVD collector with a large and growing collection of classic and foreign films. Married to another rabid film fanatic. If you want to know who D.W. Griffith, Abel Gance, Jean Renoir or Jean Grémillon are and why they are important, then you've come to the right place. I can also help you out with later American movies, such as those of Sam Fuller or Nicholas Ray. Johnny Guitar rules!

Foreign Films
From a North American point of view, I am an avid fan and video/DVD collector with a special interest in foreign and art films, especially Italian, Russian, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Chinese and Scandinavian cinema. If you have questions about the work of Federico Fellini, Andrei Tarkovsky, Akira Kurosawa, Wim Wenders, Francois Truffaut, Luis Bunuel, Zhang Yimou, Ingmar Bergman or many of the other giants of international filmmaking, then you've come to the right place! Married to a discerning cineaste, as well (some opinions given may be long-argued composite compromises). NOT really an expert in Third World cinema, unfortunately, though I am willing to learn new things! Also NOT expert or interested in: Japanese anime, foreign television (other than British), Bollywood product. |

Latin
Summe sollers sum in perlegendo aut libros aut poemas Romanorum antiquorum, though I am better at reading than composition, Im afraid! Former classics and linguistics major (degrees, BA and MA, are in English, however). But give me me a try if you need help reading, translating or composing any SHORT text in Latin or Greek (just don't ask me to translate all of Pliny's "Natural History" for you or anything like that!). #1 expert in Latin at AskMe at that site's demise. Si quaeres, me roga! |

Mythology & Folklore
Conversant with all the major and much of the minor mythology of the Greeks, Babylonians, Egyptians, Persians and Hebrews. Read a lot of the original texts. Know where to find most everything else (in a BOOK, I mean, not necessarily on the net!). Do NOT ask me about Celtic, Nordic, Slavic, Amerindian, East Asian or African (other than Egyptian/Kushite) myths--out of my competence, Im afraid! (Another AskMe refugee.)
Note: I draw a firm distinction between literary and oral MYTHOLOGY and religious cult practices; they are not the same! Especially with the Greeks! And I refuse to recognize any significant ROMAN mythology that was not borrowed from the Greeks; though they had a living religion and local cults and folklore, the Romans had NO literary mythology of their own. |

Philosophy
Widely read in Greek and German philosophy. I am able to find my way around even in outlandish modern ideologies as well, though the classics are my firm founding in this subject. (Another AskMe refugee.)
Sometimes discussions get a bit hot on the philosophy board. Good! Politics and ethics form part of philosophy--a practical part, indeed, though perhaps not the most important. My politics and values are certain to be evident when asked about my opinion, or even on controversial points of fact, but I shall honestly endeavor to keep to the straight and neutral when discussing apolitical issues. I am not here to proselytize or force my opinions on anyone. That said, much of what you will read from many experts on this board will be wrong--factually or morally. I am willing to admit that I might be wrong from time to time, but, I venture to guess, fewer times than most here. I reject wooly spiritualism and sterile rationalism equally; humanistic and pluralistic values as espoused by Epicurus, Baruch Spinoza, Albert Schweitzer, Isaiah Berlin and others have informed my own. |
