Question/Subject:
Excessive Licking and Chewing Hello again, my 8 month old puppy (Shih-tzu, yorkie) licks WAY to much. She licks carpets for hours at a time, clothes, hands/feet/hair, etc. We try to distract her with a toy or bone but she prefers to lick. What can we do? Also, whatever she finds she eats. So far she's eaten conutless pencils/pencil crayons, she's chewed holes in about 14 pairs of my socks alone, she chews on the corners of things (desks, carpets, tables, etc). What can we also do to stop this? One more thing, if she sees someone outside or another dog outside she will bark for maybe 20 minutes a time (and her bark is loud and annoying). I know she's a puppy and wants to protect/warn us but she should know not to bark at some people she knows. We have taken her to obedience classes and that help somewhat, but not totally. What can we do for this?
Some good advice from Lanman and Voiceguy. Now, I will tell you my experience with my little Lasha. It flies in the face of reason. He loves the taste of fabric softeners, and some other pleasant to humans scents, and will eat anything with these scents on them. He shews holes in blakets, clothing, anything. Leather shoes used to not be safe around him, but training corrected that. The eating clothing, however, persists. He has some allergies, and when his allergies are acting up, more licking and chewing. He too licks the carpets. He doesn't chew the carpets though. I would say, have the baby checked for allergies(especially if she is licking her paws, a sure sign of allergies). I give mine lots ot toys, and because this one likes soft things, I give him soft chew toys. He rarely eats them, just plays with them. some dogs have kooky personality traits that leave us stumped. The barking for 20 minutes.Count your blessings. that is a short barking time. My little Max wants the world to know there is a BIG dog in this house.LOL He thinks he is a watchdog. they take their responsiblilties seriously. However, if you want to correct that, the Tellington-Touch tapes will help. This is an animal massage method that works very well for corecting a lot of bad habits, from excessive barking to aggression. The massage is also VERY good for pain relief. Arthritis, pain form recovering from surgery etc, can be helped tremendously with this massage.I use it a lot. You can read about the method, and order tapes at www.lindatellington-jones.com
