This question is very easy to answer. The family unit has changed over the years.
Parents, on an average, are not in control of their children, some really don't care what they do.
Years ago, familes would sit around the dining room or kitchen table, have meals together, and talk. Today, many parents never even talk with their children.
The family as I knew it (I am 64 yrs old) doesn't exist anymore, on the average.
Therefore, Children do what they want, without consequences from their parents, or even their parents knowing what is going on.
