who???

Who and where in the bible does it tell us of a baby that was hated by god even while in his mothers womb?

revdauphinee answered on 02/19/05:

if one reads futher on in the passage there is an interesting quote atributed to God
Romans 9:15. For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion."
16. It does not, therefore, depend on man's desire or effort, but on God's mercy.

so we must rely on his mercy for works avail us nothing!

Question/Answer
Saladin asked on 01/03/05 - A Mormon understanding ...

Despite some common misunderstandings about Mormons and the Bible, it is one of our standard works and of no less importance than any other of our scriptures.

Keeping that fact in mind, I share some thoughts on some biblical passages and ask for your understanding of the same passages.

John, in the third chapter of his first epistle, says:

"Now are we the sons of God"

Isn't that a strange thing for a person to say, that he is a son of God. He continues:

"And it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is

And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as God is pure"

Such passages of scripture as this are not very often preached from pulpits in the Christian world.

Yet the Spirit of God has conveyed to us that there are solid and solemn truths in expressions of this kind.

Paul, in speaking to the Phillipians, suggested that they cultivate an ambition which seems quite strange to at the present time, though not so to the Latter-day Saints. He says:

"Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God"

As strange as it might seem, this is what Paul taught, and he understood what he was talking about. He was, he informs us, caught up to the third heaven and heard things, he tells us, that were unlawful for man to utter.

Whether Paul taught things that were unlawful, I leave others to judge. But this was what he suggested to the Saints to whom he was writing.

Would it be wrong for us to expect ourselves to cultivate an ambition of this character?

There are a number of sayings in the Bible, particularly in the New Testament, that seem somewhat strange.

"He that overcometh shall inherit all things"

What an expression is that? Who believes it?

If a father were to say to his son,

"My son, be faithful, and follow my counsels, and when you become of age, you shall inherit all that I possess," it would mean something, would it not?

Did Jesus intend to deceive us when He made use of this expression?

There is no deception in the language, so he really meant precisely what He said.

Again, Jesus said:

"To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in His throne"

That is a wonderful saying. But, is there any truth in it? I believe, as do all Mormons, that is all true because it is the Lord Almighty that said it.

We are told in the Scriptures by the Apostle Paul:

"For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands eternal in the heavens"

I believe that.

And when Paul says that Jesus

"shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto His glorious body," then I believe that also.

Again:

"For he that receiveth my servants receiveth me;

And he that receiveth me receiveth my Father;
And he that receiveth my Father, receiveth my Father's kingdom; therefore all that my Father hath shall be given unto him"

Could you think of anything more that could be given?

Paul comprehended these things very well, for he said

"he pressed forward to the mark of the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus"

That is a very wonderful thing to me.

As John said:

"Every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as God is pure"

How does God proposes to confer this mighty honour upon us and to raise us to this condition of glory and exaltation?

Who are we that God should do all this for us?

Because, we are "the offspring of God"

Imagine an emperor sitting upon his throne, governing and controlling his empire wisely and properly. He has an infant son that sits upon the knee of its mother.

That son he proposes to one day set upon his throne, to govern and control his empire.

Here is that infant, perfectly helpless, not knowing how to sustain its own life, not able to walk alone, without any knowledge, and here is this mighty emperor sitting upon his throne and governing his vast empire.

Who would believe that he could raise that infant up to such a condition as to make it suitable to be placed on his throne?

No one would, unless he had seen such things accomplished in his experience; seen the infant develop into boyhood, and then to manhood, possessing all the powers, faculties and possibilities of its father.

Now, we are the sons and daughters of God (see Hebress 12:9). He has begotten us in His own image (Genesis 1:26-27).

He has given us faculties and powers that are capable of enlargement until His fulness is reached which He has promised until we shall sit upon his throne.

That is what I gain from these, and other, Bible passages, especially when Jesus declared:

John 16:15

"All things that the Father hath are mine"

and John's record confirms,

John 3:35

"The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand"

And Paul understood this when he wrote,

Romans 8:16-17

"The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with [him], that we may be also glorified together"

This tells me that those who are faithful will sit on God's throne with Jesus and share in the inheritance and glory that the Father gives to his Son.

How do you read and understand the promises made in these passages?

Ronnie

Liz22 asked on 10/27/04 - Sabbath

Do We Obey The Ten Commandments?
Or now is there only nine?
Why have we changed the Sabbath "Saturday" and made it Sunday?

"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it." Exodus 20:8-11 In this next text we will see how God rested, blessed and sanctified this same day: "And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which he had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made." Genesis 2:2,3

Although some may say' That Jesus did away with the Sabbath; If so why did he say that when he returns in
the last days this very scripture

Question/Answer
Saladin asked on 10/19/04 - Baldness in the Bible

Having heard of the miraculous ascent of Elijah and the appointment of Elisha as his successor, some Israelite children took occasion to ridicule the prophet.

"Go up, thou baldhead," they cried, meaning, "Why don't you ascend, thou baldhead! Go on, ascend!" Like Elijah!

They were mocking God in his representatives.

Then Elisha turned toward them and gave them a searching look whereupon he "cursed" or rebuked them in the name of the Lord.

"And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them."

I am aware that critics have aimed their arrows at this Biblical story, as against many others. They have charged the prophet with unnecessary cruelty.

But the fact is that the prophet was no more responsible for the fate of these mockers, than was Noah for the flood, or Jonah for the destruction of Nineveh.

The bears?

Well, they did not belong to Elisha. Dr. Clarke, in his Bible Commentary, asks:

Is it not possible that these young men had been destroying the whelps of the she bears that now pursued them?

The statement that they were she bears gives color to this conjecture."

Also the fact so many pupils were gathered together. Most likely, they had been on some kind of an excursion.

Children do not accidentally get together in large numbers. Only when they go in the capacity of a school, or a Sunday school, or some organization.

They may have been out in the woods for the purpose of ridding the country of predatory animals, to save the sheep.

They may have destroyed, or even captured, cubs belonging to these bear mothers, and if they had not stopped to insult the prophet, they might have reached their homes in safety.

The fury of a bear mother was proverbial in Israel.

When Hushai advised Absalom not to pursue David, he said,

"Thou knowest thy father and his men, that they be mighty men, and they be chafed in their minds, as a bear, robbed of her whelps in the field."
(2 Sam. 17:8)

The story is a striking illustration of the sinfulness of levity regarding sacred things and persons.

However, I have in mind that the 'baldness' that was the tool of ridicule of their torment of Elisha is of a different order than lack of head hair.

Have you ever considered a different meaning of 'bald head' as the cause of Elisha's cursing them?

Saladin - thinning but not yet bald

Bobbye asked on 08/28/04 - "ON MY FATHER'S SIDE!"

Friends of mine in a musical ministry have recorded a beautiful Gospel song that describes Jesus - - "On my mother's side." It also describes His Deity: "On my Father's side."

Just thought I'd brighten your day in sharing the words of this beautiful song.
=================

ON MY FATHER'S SIDE!
The verse establishes the scene of the twelve-year-old Jesus in the Temple with the doctors and lawyers questioning Him. The chorus reveals His answers.

CHORUS:
(1) WHAT'S YOUR NAME, YOUNG MAN?
On my mother's side: MY NAME IS JESUS!
But on my Father's side: I'M CALLED "IM-MAN-UEL!"

(2) WHERE'RE YOU FROM, YOUNG MAN?
On my mother's side: I'm from Bethlehem.
But on my Father's side: It's New Je-ru-sa-lem!

(3) WHAT'S YOUR AGE, YOUNG MAN?
On my mother's side: I AM TWELVE YEARS.
But on my Father's side: I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN!

(4) WHAT'RE YOUR PLANS, YOUNG MAN?
On my mother's side: I'LL BE CRU-CI-FIED!
But on my Father's side: IN THREE DAYS I'LL RISE AND SIT AT MY FATHER'S SIDE!"

Be blessed,

THE OT WAS A BLOOD COVENANT OF ANIMAL BLOOD FOR THE ATONEMENT OF SINS. Luk 17:6 And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.

I found this in the news today....Jeff

Scholars Discover Parts of Luke's Gospel

The clue was barely legible. At first, it was just the name that was visible: Simon. It was carved in Greek letters high atop the mammoth and weather-beaten burial monument that dates from the time of Christ.

Emile Puech and Joe Zias, two Jerusalem scholars who credit the serendipity of seeing that almost-faded name in a photograph shot in exactly the right light just as the sun was setting, have also found inscribed on the 60-foot-high tombstone a verse from the Gospel According to St. Luke, specifically Luke: 2:25, that was so faded it was never before visible, reports The Associated Press.

Such archaeological finds are extremely rare. While several Old Testament verses have been found on monuments, this is believed to be the first discovery of a New Testament verse carved onto an ancient Holy Land shrine. Jim Strange, a New Testament scholar from the University of South Florida, told AP that ancient people believed that chiseling verses of Scripture into monuments debased the sacred words. It wasn't until 1000 A.D. that Bible verses became more common on shrines, and then they were found in Europe--not the Holy Land.

What the inscription does not tell us: The inscription declares that the tomb is that of Simon. He was a devout Jew whom the Bible credits with cradling the infant Jesus and recognizing him as the Messiah. However, the experts say it is doubtful Simon is actually buried here. Instead, the monument was built to honor Jerusalem's aristocracy at the time of Jesus. The inscriptions were carved in the 4th century when Byzantine Christians scoured the Holy Land for sacred sites linked to the Bible and then marked them. Often, they relied on local lore to do this. This particular monument is in the Kidron Valley, between Jerusalem's walled Old City and the Mount of Olives.

What the inscription does tell us: The reason this find is significant is that it supports what have always been scant references to a Byzantine-era belief that three biblical figures--Simon, Zachariah, and James, who was the brother of Jesus--shared the same tomb. Earlier this year, an inscription referring to Zachariah, who was John the Baptist's father, was found on the same monument by the two Jerusalem scholars. Now Puech and Zias will continue their close-up examination of the tombstone in the hopes of finding an inscription that refers to James, the brother of Jesus. If they find that, the trio is complete.

It's likely James will be mentioned on the monument, since it is thought he died nearby. James was hurled off the Jewish Temple, bludgeoned to death in the Kidron Valley below and buried near there. Zachariah was a temple priest who was murdered by zealots and then tossed into the valley. It is not known how or where Simon died. There are several historical references to the three men being buried together, but there is no archaeological evidence of this.

The letters are inscribed vertically on the monument and run together. They are of a different height and are actually crooked. The inscription says the monument is the tomb of "Simeon who was a very just man and a very devoted old (person) and waiting for the consolation of the people." Simeon is the Greek version of Simon. The words are identical to Luke 2:25 as they appeared in the 4th-century Bible, also called the Codex Sinaiticus, notes AP. The Zachariah inscription reads: "This is the tomb of Zachariah, martyr, very pious priest, father of John."

The research was presented by the two scholars at the annual conference of the American Schools of Oriental Research in Atlanta.

Bobbye asked on 12/02/03 - RED LETTER BIBLE:

This was discussed last year on one of the other boards. In light of a recent question re the Red Letter Bible, I thought you might find it of interest. Bobbye
===========
"
THE RED LETTER BIBLE:
There are millions of people who read the Bible daily, yet few may know why some publishers print the words of Jesus Christ in red. Mr. William Emmett Shelton (author) of Magador, Ohio and Mr. Laurence S. Heely Jr., publisher of Christian Herald Magazine, say that the idea originated from a man by the name of Louis Klopsch, the first editor for the Christian Herald.

'Louis Klopsch was born March 7, 1852 in Germany. In 1853 his mother died. The next year his father, Osmar Klopsch MD, brought him to the United States. Louis studied journalism at what is now Columbia University. He graduated with high honors. With the Christian Herald he rose from stock boy to editor amidst the company of some very religious publishers. By about the year 1889 he was the owner-editor of the American edition of the Christian Herald Magazine.

'On June 19, 1899, the now Dr. Louis Klopsch was writing and editorial for the Christian Herald when his eyes fell upon Luke 22:20 and the words: "This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you." Dr. Klopsch realized that these were the words of our Saviour when he instituted the Lord's Supper. reasoning that all blood was red, he asked himself, 'Why not a red letter Bible with the red words to be those of our Lord?'

'Dr. T. Dewitt Talmadge, pastor of the Brooklyn Temple where Louis and his father worshipped, encouraged him greatly by saying, "It could do no harm, and it most certainly could do much good."

'The editor besought Bible scholars in America and Europe to submit passages they regarded as spoken by Jesus Christ while on the earth (some publishers have since expanded this to include all words in red spoken by Christ).

'The November 1901 issue of the monthly magazine, ran a large advertisement offering a red letter Bible to the readers. The first printing of this red letter Bible numbered sixty thousand copies. They were printed on presses owned by Dr. Klopsch. The edition sold quickly. Presses were run day and night to supply the demand. The King of Sweden upon receiving a copy, sent a congratulatory cablegram to Dr. Klopsch. Nevertheles the one telegram that thrilled publisher Louis Klopsch the most was the one he received from President Theodore Roosevelt. There followed a letter on White House stationery inviting him to dine with the chief executive. He accepted.

'Dr. Louis Klopsch died March 28, 1910, and was buried at Mont Lawn near Tonawanda, New York, where he had established an orphanage. The New York Tribune said:

'He will not be easily replaced. He lived and died by his own motto:
Do All the Good You Can for All the People You Can
This he truly did."

for the gain is a life free from all pain and one in the presence of God>

(Ps.49:15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me.

Question/Answer
hOPE12 asked on 10/01/03 - Abortions, Are they murder?

Hello Everyone,

Do you want to die? No one in their right mind does.

During World War II the Nazis killed millions of victims in their concentration camps. Looking back, would you have chosen to be one of them? Like those victims, aborted fetuses have no choice, and they die by the tens of millions every year. To this situation the apostle Peter’s injunction applies: “Let none of you suffer as a murderer.”—1 Peter 4:15.

In this respect the comments of second-century Christians, Tertullian and Athenagoras, are to the point: “In our case, murder being once for all forbidden, we may not destroy even the fetus in the womb.” (Tertullian) “And when we say that those women who use drugs to bring on abortion commit murder, and will have to give an account to God for the abortion, on what principles should we commit murder?” (Athenagoras)

You be the one to decide, is it murder or is it not murder?

Thank you,
Hope12

Billy asked on 09/20/03 - Mark 8:22-25

22 And they came to Bethsaida: and they bring to him a blind man. And they besought him that he would touch him.
23 And taking the blind man by the hand, he led him out of the town. And spitting upon his eyes, laying his hands on him, he asked him if he saw any thing.
24 And looking up, he said: I see men, as it were trees, walking.

25 After that again he laid his hands upon his eyes: and he began to see and was restored, so that he saw all things clearly.

This is the only passage in the Bible where it is recorded that Our Lord an Savior touched someone twice.

Why did it take a second touch, and do we need a second touch today to be healed? IMHO, isn't one touch from the Master's Hand sufficient?

revdauphinee answered on 03/06/04:

God can hael without touching he still heals to day but since he was at that time present is it not comfoting to be touched with a loving touch ?a person who had been blind must have needed such an assurance for clearly some of the sights of this world can be frightening!

Concerning Jesus' responce to the woman:

This prompts a question that has nagged at me for some time now:

What indications do we have in the teachings of Jesus (NOT the writings of Paul, Peter, or any of the others) that Jesus indeed came for the Gentiles as well? What did Jesus say that indicates he did NOT come solely for the Jews?

revdauphinee answered on 03/06/04:

because it says he loves the world it did not say he loved only Israel!

John 3:16. For God so loved the ((world,)) that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that ((the world)) through him might be saved.
18. He that believeth on him is not condemned:
