bongster asked on 07/09/07 - "the specified module cannot be found"

I tried to uninstall Norton again but "the specided module cannot be found" popped up. I also could not install Mcafee as they said Norton was still installed as a conflicting software.

Pls help, i am running on Windows Vista.

Hope all is well. A little chilly here (4F). Anyway, I'm haviong trouble remembering how to do this:

Ex:
What is the formula?
Can the total be in the same cell as the 2nd number?

2 boxes 3 lbs weight

ScottGem answered on 08/30/06:

To total a column (or Row), you can use the Sigma icon. Make the first blank cell at the bottom of the column the active cell and press the icon. This automatically places the SUM() function in the cell setting the range to cover the column up to the first blank row.

Or you can simply manually enter:

=Sum(C2:C5)

ScottGem answered on 08/26/06:

No, you aren't listening to what I've been telling you. Spyware is code that is installed on your PC. For spyware to be included in a shrink wrapped package, it would mean it was placed within the final distribution package either at the author's site or at the company that makes the disks. Such places are very well protected and may not even have access to the Internet for the machines that make the distribution packages. So it would be extremely rare for malware to get into such a commercial package. If it happened it would be caught very quickly.

I will tell you I have been using PCs and cyberspace for over 20 years. I have never gotten a virus or serious malware in all that time.

It is very rare that shrink wrapped commercial software, purchased from retail outlets contain any spyware. Since such disks are mass produced, it would have to have been in vendors machines when the disk master was burnt.

Most malware come as surreptiously forced downloads when you visit sites or code hiddne within files you download.

dawnmac asked on 08/18/06 - MS Word bullet points

Hi,

I've got some numbered bullet points in a document and need to create normal bullet points to a section within these numbered bullet points.

When I try to do this, it changes the existing (numbered) bullet points. Do you know how I can get round this?

Thanks,

Dawn

ScottGem answered on 08/18/06:

Changing numbering sequences can get really hairy. I've had issues with that before. Assuming you are intserting between existing numbered paragraphs try this:

Go to the end of the paragraph where you want to insert the bullet points and press enter. This should insert a new numbered paragraph and renumber all the others. Make sure the new paragraph is selected and click on the format menu, choose Styles then either Clear style or set the style of the paragraph to Normal. This should remove the number from that paragraph and restore the numbering of the following paragraphs. Now you should be able to format the inserted paragraph as a regular bullet.

Depends on whether your sound is onboard or on a separate card. If its onboard then you need drivers for the new motherboard. If its a separate card then you just need to know what card.

The problem is I can't tell you what hardware you have. You can try going to belarc.com and run the advisor, but if there is no audio recognized, it might not show anything.

into their sockets at the back of the tower.
please help a very low tech dummy:)

ScottGem answered on 07/13/06:

What probably happened here is that your version of XP doesn't have the proper drivers for your sound card. So when you reloaded XP, it didn't detect it.

What you need to do is reinstall the sound card with the proper drivers. This means using the drivers disk that came with your PC or sound card. Or gettign the drivers from the sound card manufacturer's web site. For the latter, that means knowing the exact make and model of your sound card.

However, when I either upload this file as either an Excel file or after converting it to a HTM file, it will no longer PRINT in Landscape format.

If you convert to HTML, you would have to reset your printer to landscape. If you printer directly from the WEB page, the same thing is true. Probably the best way to ensure landscape is to upload it as a PDF.

Question/Answer
webtrain1 asked on 04/14/06 - scanned doc

How can i scan A document and edit it's fields.
Webtrain1

ScottGem answered on 04/14/06:

If you are asking how to scan a form and then fill in the fields on that form, there are a couple of packages that do this. Omniform is one package that will do it, but its a bit expensive. Another possibility is Paperport which does a lot about managing scans including a FormTyper module that does most of what OmniForm does.

If you are scanning in a plain text document and what to edit the text, you need OCR (Optical Character Reader) software. This will scan a document and read it, turning into a editable text document like Notepad or Word. There are a few good OCR packages available. Most scanners are bundled with OCR software.

Question/Answer
luhayes asked on 02/20/06 - Excel rounding

One problem with Excel is that if you have formulas with actual results having more than 2 decimal points you can have trouble displaying currency.

For example, if two cells each contain the value 10.005, and the cells are formatted to display values in currency format, the value $10.01 is displayed in each cell. If you add the two cells together, the result is $20.01 because Microsoft Excel adds the stored values 10.005 + 10.005, not the displayed values.

This decimal display problem can be avoided by using Excel's ROUND function and setting it to 2 places for every formula in the spreadsheet.

If there a a great number of formulas, I find it time consuming to add the ROUND function to each of them individually.

QUESTION: Is there any way to set a worksheet so that the ROUND function is applied to each formula you develop?

ScottGem answered on 02/21/06:

First, you don't need Paste Special. If you copy a formula to other cells, the formual will copy not the value. You would use Paste Special only if you didn't want to copy the formulas.

Second, from your question I doubt if copy and paste will do anywhere near what you want. As I understood you, you are entering different formulas from time to time and want to be able to round them.

What you might be able to do is build a macro to do this. I'm not very good with Excel VBA, but you should be able to build a macro that will take an existing formula in a cell and add the round function to it. That way you can just press a key combination (like Alt+R) to add rounding to any formula.

Ccl471 asked on 02/20/06 - Nero StartSmart

I just bought a new pc. It came with Nero. It has a desktop icon called Nero StartSmart. I looked at its folder under c: > Program Files and found a file that contained info about the program, similar to a ReadMe file, which said that its version is 6.6.0.16.

Is this version of Nero a trial version or is it a full version that was given to me free by the pc's seller?

Many thanks,

ScottGem answered on 02/21/06:

Nero.com lists the most current version as 7. However, in a suite of programs, like Nero, different modules may have different version numbers.

Most likely its not the most current version unless the PC seller has a bundle deal with Nero. If this is the PC you bought from Tiger, since it came disassembled, I would question if any software was provided.

Ccl471 asked on 02/20/06 - OS Recognition of RAM

I just bought a custom-built pc with a Dual-core 2.4GHz AMD Athlon X2 CPU with a 2000MHz FSB and 4GB of RAM.

I called a discount online retailer, TigerDirect.com, who manufactures Tiger computers by Systemax, and ordered all the components, which they shipped to me, then I brought the parts to a local computer dealer(a small business, not one of the major chain computer stores), and they assembled the pc for me. I had Win XP Home Ed. SP2 installed, whose installation CD I bought from an online vendor at a deep discount.

The computer dealer who built up my pc for me told me that my OS can only recognize 3.18 GB of the memory I have installed on my pc. He said I would need Win XP Pro x64 to recognize all of my RAM. But he also told me that x64 is currently only a Beta version, meaning that Microsoft still has many bugs to work out on it.

So I'm not going to buy x64 right now. But will Win Vista be able to recognize all my RAM? If it will be able to, then I'll buy it a little more than one year after it hits the market(this July, is it?), to give Microsoft enough time to work out all the bugs on it.

Many thanks,

C.L.

However, this discussion:

indicates there may be some limits if you are using shared video.

As for the 64 bit version, its is no longer in Beta, but it hasn't gotten great reviews. The feedback I get is to wait for Vista.

I am a bit concerned about your explanation of getting XP at a "deep discount". It may not be a legal version or it may be grey market. That could also cause you some problems.

Question/Answer
Ccl471 asked on 01/26/06 - Anti-spyware for Removing WinFixer

Dear Scott:

I read the question about anti-spyware software recommendations posted by luhayes on 5/22/05, on the Security Board, that you answered.

The anti-spyware program you recommended him is eTrust Pest Patrol.

Well, my computer is infested with WinFixer spyware. I did some research on WinFixer online, and they say it is nearly impossible to remove. I myself have tried removing it using Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy, and have been unsuccessful.

WinFixer is particularly annoying. Most spyware gives you just one pop-up ad trying to get you to buy their product, and then if you close the pop-up it doesn't bother you anymore.

WinFixer gives you a series of pop-up windows. First it gives you a pop-up window that says your pc is infected with spyware and that you need to buy their product in order to remove it and protect your pc.

When you close that window, a second one pops up that says your pc is not protected, blah blah blah... When you close that window, a dialog box pops up that says they will install WinFixer on your computer now. The only option they give you is to click OK and proceed with the installation(there's only an OK button, no Cancel button).

Is it even legal for them to force you to install their product like that? Someone who is a complete beginner to computers wouldn't know that you can close that dialog box using CTRL-ALT-DEL. They would be forced to click OK on the dialog box and install, and therefore buy, WinFixer.

As you can see, I am very annoyed with WinFixer.

One website does comparisons of anti-spyware programs that can remove WinFixer. That site says the best one is XoftSpy by ParetoLogic.

My question to you is: does eTrust Pest Patrol have the ability to remove WinFixer? If you know for sure that it can, then I will buy it.

Otherwise, I'll buy XoftSpy. Both programs cost $30. My concern is that even though I know XoftSpy is effective against WinFixer, I don't know how good it is against other spyware.

ParetoLogic says XoftSpy removes: Adware, Spyware, Pop-Up Generators, Keyloggers, Trojans, Hijackers, and Malware.

Assuming XoftSpy can do all that, how does Pest Patrol compare?

Many thanks,

C.L.

ScottGem answered on 01/27/06:

Pest patrol has gotten good reviews, but I stopped using it in favor of Microsoft's Anti-Spyware. The entire E-Trust suite just got a 4 star rating from PC Mag. I would check on the E-Trust site and see what it says about Winfixer.

As to whether they can install the stuff, generally they give you a EULA with junk like that buried. They count on people not reading the fine print.

There is legislation being proposed in several jurisidictions to prevent this surreptitious installations.

ScottGem answered on 12/14/05:

While there is a lot of decent free software out there, you have to understand that most developers like to get paid for their time. Most of the free stuff is from people who built something for their own use and decided to give it to others who might have an interest. But generally such programs have limited, if any support.

One of the best sources for freeware is tucows.com, you can search for just freeware.

But if you really want a program to do exactly what you need it to, you should expect to pay. The good news is that software costs have come down and most software is in the under $100 range.

SOMEBODY TOLD ME IN ORDER TO COPY FILES FROM A HARDRIVE TO A ZIP DRIVE IN THE A PROMPT I NEED TO PUT IN A DOS DRIVER DISK IN MY FLOPPY DRIVE WHERE CAN I GET A DOS DRIVER DISK

ScottGem answered on 11/29/05:

To be able to use a ZIP drive, you need to load the drivers for the drive. If you want to do this from a DOS prompt, you need to load the drivers during boot up. That means the drivers have to be copied onto your bootdisks and loaded in your autoexec.bat. Instructions for doing so should be in oyur ZIP drive manual. If you no longer have the manual you can get the instructions at iomega.com.

Ccl471 asked on 10/22/05 - Compatibility of Older Program and Hardware Driver with Newer Operating Systems

I want to offer to give my sister's friend two items, Jet Fighter IV, and a Top Gun Fox 2 Pro Joystick.

The box for the Jet Fighter game lists three companies that jointly produced the software: Talonsoft, Mission Studios, and RD Simulations Inc.

The Top Gun Joystick was manufactured by Thrustmaster.

I want to give the guy the two items in exchange for him doing some minor repairs of electronics for me.

I purchased both items before Windows XP was released to the market. So I want to make sure: will they be compatible with Win XP, or even Win Vista?

Many thanks,

superqaz asked on 10/20/05 - freeware software to download whole web sites

hi

is thewre any freeware software to download whole web sites

ScottGem answered on 10/21/05:

Internet Explorer includes this feature. Go to Help in IE and search for 'Offline WEB Browsing'.

As to downloading the whole site, there might be some copyright issues about that. Also some sites can be huge and downloaing all the pages could take large amounts of time and disk space.

I did find this tool:
http://www.web-site-downloader.com/entire/?int=OT&OVRAW=save%20web%20sites&OVKEY=web%20site%20save&OVMTC=standard

While its not free, $14.95 ain't much.

Can large applications be copied to a media, zip disk, cdrw or via netwok connection from one pc to another?
(Not operating systems, appls like PC Anywhere32, or an accounting application)

ScottGem answered on 10/13/05:

Not directly. A Windows application needs to be installed from the original install files. The installation routine makes changes to your system that can't be replicated by just copying the program folder.

However, there are some utilities like PC Relocate and Intellimover that claim to be able to move applications from one PC to another.

I have AOL 9.0 Security Edition at work.
I can get old mail but it only goes back 7 days.
What i really need sometimes is older mail.
I go to manage mail, and lok up sent old mail but it only goes back to the 14th or so. Then shows July and back. the first 2 weeks of August mail is not there. i get mail everyday. How can i view all past mail?

ScottGem answered on 09/01/05:

AOL stores some old mail on its server, but how old is dependent on your settings. Under your Mail Settings you can specify how long old mail is kept after you read it. The maximum allowed is 7 days. You can elect to retain all mail in your Saved Mail Folder (which is on your hard drive) or only save specific e-mails there. If you don't save all mail, then you have to consciously save individual ones.

If mail is gone from either your old mail or Saved mail folders its gone for good.

ScottGem answered on 07/01/05:

More likely someone with your name in their address book was infected and the virus sent out a bunch of e-mail spoofing the From line to show your address. So replies came back to you.

Unfdortunately there is nothing you can do about this except wait it out for the person who was infected to clean the infection out.

All I need is for someone to tell me how I can create a formula for a deduction that comes out only once a month.

ScottGem answered on 06/09/05:

We would really need more info to help with this. Sounds like you are trying to do this only for your checks not for a company, correct?

Is your pay period every 2 weeks? So its posible to have 3 checks in a month? Which paycheck does the deduction come from? How did you set up the sheet? Are you just trying to calc the current check or maintain a history or what? Did you pre enter the deductions and just want to figure out how to include or not include the specific deduction?

There may be more questions, but as you can see this is not a cut and dried issue. We need info to help.

xxxaxxx asked on 06/07/05 - Software for overriding copyright

Hello, experts,

Do you know of a free site where I can download software to override the copyright on my original DVDs? I just want back-up copies for my personal use and as an assurance on the investment I made.

I'm not a tekkie and am a first time user of burners. I bought my Asus DVD writer a few days ago because I want to back up my original DVD collections. I didn't expect it will be quite impossible to "copy" them.

The technician in the shop where I bought the DVD writer said another buyer encountered the same problem as mine but was able to download a software online and solved it. Problem is, the technician can't remember what the software was or where the site is.

I'll be very grateful for your help.

Thanks.

ScottGem answered on 06/07/05:

There used to be a software package called DVD X Copy by 123software. However, this package was pulled from sale because it violates copyright law.

There are several DVD copy programs on the retail shelves, but I'm not sure how well they copy protected disks.

Since such software is illegal, it would be unethical of any of us to refer you to such software. You can blame the pirates who use the file sharing services like KaZaa (and the services themselves for tacitly promoting piracy) for making it harder for honest people to make backups for personal use.

I am using MS Word, and in doing my document, something happened on my screen. Now after every every sentence is this character and i can't get rid of it nor know how it started to appear on my document. It shows up on all my word docs. It look like a paragraph format symbol. if yoou goto format - paragraph in Word, the symbol icon a dot a two lines.
like this *||. Any idea what it is?

ScottGem answered on 04/19/05:

Its a paragraph symbol. There is probably an icon on your toolbar with the same symbol that toggles between showing the symbol and hiding it. You probably pressed it inadvertently.

However I would leave it. Word is very paragraph centric. A lot of the formatting is tied to paragraphs. By displaying this symbol (it doesn't print), you can see where the paragraphs end so you can more accurately apply formatting. I always turn it on on my machines and recommend that others keep it on.

You can also turn it on and off by going to Tools>Options and check the pragraph marks box under Hidden characters on the View tab.

You advised to download laser jet 4 printer drivers but on hp sites there are so many different types of lj4 drivers with different letters. Can you please be more specific? (very low tech here)
And how come that lj 4 can function with lj 1010?
tahnks very much for teh help

ScottGem answered on 04/01/05:

Don't download the LJ 4 drivers. The LJ 4 drivers are very stable and pretty universal. I've had success with newer LJs using those drivers. You don't need to download them. Go to Start>Printers and Faxes, then choose Add Printer. After Selecting the port, you will get a list of printers. Select HP as the manufacturer then scroll down the list of printers. Select the LJ 4.

Also, I'm wondering exactly what she downloaded for the 1010. I went to HP.com selected Driver Downloads then typed in LJ 1010. From there I selected Win XP as the OS. What you need to d/l from the next page is the hp Laserjet 1010 series printing system. This is a 55M download so it will take awhile, especially if you have a dialup. If you don't have broadband, then I would use the option on that page to order a CD.

ScottGem answered on 03/23/05:

AOL 9.0 is probably the most stable version yet. However, it works best with Win XP. If you have an older machine, you might not have the horsepower to run AOL 9.

AOl has always been a resource hog, so, on on aolder machine, an older version might be better.

One point on e-mail. Rognerud may not help there. Most e-mail systems store e-mail is a special type of database. The point being that individual e-mails are not individual files. When you delete an e-mail you are saving the file over the existing one. So recovery is much more difficult.

Each EULA is different so I can't tell you what specifically to look for. It will usually says something like; I agree to the installation of ... then list some utilities. Fred,

Please help.

My friend and i were trying to view some pictures on her computer. We were using pictures that had been put on a CD by other people.

We are using a Kodak Picture CD. We can open many of the pictures and manipulate them. Some of the pictures have little "lock" icons, or little heart icons superimposed over the file and we can not open those pictues. We can not even see a thumbnail picture.

What is the problem? How do we fix this so all pictures can be opened?

Thank you very much!

Greenlea

ScottGem answered on 02/07/05:

It would help to know the full filenames of each of files that can't be opened. I would suspect that they may be additional files put on the Kodak CD to run slideshows or catalog the disk or something like that and not actual pictures.

Another possibility is these are pictures that are protected against copying and need to be unlocked someway.

You might also want to go back to the source of the CD (the person who gave it to you or the store that generated it) and ask them what they are.

I have adobe acrobat 5/0. I can no longer convert documents to pdf for my website. I open the word doc, click file, print, then choose acrobat distiller as the "printer", and the blue bar moves about halfway and freezes. It says "word is preparing to background print the document". Then it looks like it's working and I get a balloon at the bottom right tray with "this document failed to print". I did not want to print it. I wanted to convert it to a pdf to send to my website. Then I click on the balloon and it opens a acrobat distiller window that shows print jobs pending in word. I cant' even delete the top one.

How can I simply convert word to pdf like i used to? It will not save them to the acrobat folder even when it looks like it is about to. I tried the two websites listed in the help and troubleshooter, but neither were any help at all.

ScottGem answered on 12/05/04:

The way to normally "convert" a file to PDF is to "print" it using either the PDFwriter or Distiller. This "prints" the document to a PDF format.

If the Distiller or PDFWriter isn't working I would reinstall Adobe Acrobat. Its probably become corrupted.

Hi,
I am using Visual Basic 6 with Segate Crystal Report 8. I got 2 questions.

1. How can i search a database by using 2 values of date. Following is the string that I am using. Please tell me what I am doing wrong here.

rs.Open "select * from sale where sale_date between " & Format$(൉/" & DTP01.Month & "/" & DTP01.Year, "dd/m/yyy") & " and " & Format$(൧/" & DTP01.Month & "/" & DTP01.Year, "dd/m/yyy"), db, adOpenDynamic, adLockOptimistic, adCmdText

DTP01 is a date-time picker object. I am only collecting month and year value from the dtpicker and then trying to get all the sale records of that month (for a monthly report).

2. I am using an access database along with crystal report. Now i have setted the SAVE DATA WITH REPORT value (of report file) to false, because of which, the report pickes up new data from the database every time it is opened. The problem is that the database is password protected. I think thats why it give me a SESSION PARAMETER ERROR every time VB opens the report. Is there any way i can save the database password along with crystal report or is there any way around this. Unsetting the password is not an option.

Thanks in advance.

ScottGem answered on 11/03/04:

I'm not a VB coder, so I'm not sure what date functions exist in VB. In VBA I would use something like this:

DateAdd("m",1,DateSerial(Year(datevalue),Month(datevalue0,1))-1

The DateSerial function would return the first day of the current month and year. The Dateadd function would increment that by 1 month. The -1 would then get you the last day of the previous month.

ScottGem answered on 11/02/04:

For # 1 the question is how what datatype is Sale_Date. If Sale_Date is a Date/Time field, then what you have is erroneous. You need to use something like:

rs.Open "select * from sale where sale_date between #" & startdate & "# AND #" & enddate & "#"

For #2 you might use an ODBC DSN instead of directly accessing the Access database.

Hello,

I am in need of purchasing some Shopping Cart Software. I need it for a Photography Website, that runs on Unix servers.

Is there some shopping cart software that you have worked with and have liked? If not, have you heard about any particular brand of shopping cart software that others have liked?

Any and all help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

ScottGem answered on 10/28/04:

This is not an area that is my strong suit. You should be asking the WEB Developers. However, the best people to ask is your WEB host service. They can usually bundle in such a package as part of your hosting package.

luhayes asked on 09/17/04 - Digital Portfolio for Mac

I am applying for a job that requires presenting a "digital portfolio of projects on CD for the Mac."

What software should I use to save the pictures? What is the Mac equivalent to Power Point?

I called the HR department at the employment agency and they did not provide info about what software they have.

What shall I use to make a presentation that would include captions?

I would use Power Point for a PC platform but that is not possible.

ScottGem answered on 09/17/04:

There is a version of Office for the Mac, but I'm not sure if Powerpoint is part of it. I would check at microsoft.comoffice for details.

I'm not a MAC person so hopefully someone else can advise specifically, but if it were I, I would use HTML. You don't make it clear what types of projects you are using, but HTML is universal. You can output a Powerpoint presentation to HTML and that should do the job.

Another possibility is PDF format. That is also cross platform.

Hope this helps,

ScottGem answered on 09/14/04:

You have to have either the full Adobe Acrobat program, or some other PDF writer. Scansoft.com has one. I've also had success with CutePDF which is a freebie. With non-Adobe products you don't get the full capabilities of the PDF format.

riccioni asked on 08/26/04 - How to isolate audio from a movie

I want to send as an e-mail attachment part of the audio of a movie I have on my hard disk, but I don't know how to do this. The first thing I should do, I think, is to isolate that part of the audio from the movie and then create an audio file that could be sent through e-mail. Is there a program that allows me to do this?

Thanks in advance for the help.

ScottGem answered on 08/26/04:

I believe there is, but that would probably be a violation of copyright law. Even if you had obtained the movie legally (and I'm not saying you did or didn't), making a copy of any part of it, except for personal use would, most likely, violate the copyright.

MagikGuy asked on 08/23/04 - An Annoying Problem

Hi There!

I have had this problem with a piece of software for weeks now but it just wont go!

I use MSN Messenger on a regular basis and like any other day I tried to open MSN Messenger (I will just call it MSN form now on) and it started up. I got signed in, my buddies who were online showed up but then it crashed. You could not press anything and the only way to get out of it was to do the CTRL+ALT+DEL button or press the 'X' and wait untill the 'Programe Not Responding' box came up.

I tried this many other times and the problem still occured. I uninstalled the programme and re-installed it. The same thing happened. I did this over 5 times and the same thing occured.

I tried another computer in the house and the same thing occured, however I went to my friends house and their MSN worked fine. My dad (who has the other computer) scrubbed everyhting off of his computer and then put everything back on - MSN worked. I do not want to scrubb everything off of my puter so what can I do?

I tried to contact MSN using their 'Help Form' but when I try to send it the stupid 'Page Cannot Be Displayed' comes up.

Please Help!

Stefan

P.S I did download MSN from the official site!

ScottGem answered on 08/23/04:

Check for spyware or a virus. You may have gotten one sent thru MSN. You might also try doing a restore to a point prior to the crash.

I have Win XP with Norton antivirus 2004, Office XP, Ad-Aware, and ZoneAlarm.

I now have a second hard drive and would like to create drive images at the end of each day.

I've narrowed down my choices to Norton Ghost and Drive Image (which I understand is now owned by Symantec).

I want the process to be super easy to do at the end of each day.

Which should I choose?

ScottGem answered on 05/06/04:

I would NOT use drive Imaging in this way. Creating an image of an entire drive take a good amount of time. Its not worth doing unless there is a material change to the partition. In addition, drive imaging is not that automatic, since it has to happen from DOS.

I would suggest you read my FAQ on backups. I would use a backup utility to back up data files on a nightly basis. Use a drive image tool only when you add or remove software or make material changes to your configuration.

As to whihc tool, they both are very good and will work well at cloning a drive.

In Excel 2000 I am trying to change the format of a specific column to a date format so that instead of typing in 03/14/01 I could type in 031401 and it will automatically convert it to 03/14/01 for me.

I tried the following but it doesn't work for me.

- Highlight the column or specific cells that will contain dates.
- Click FORMAT-CELLS.
- Click Number tab.
- Click Date in the Category list.
- Click on 03/14/01 in the Type list.
- Confirm that the Local is set to English (United States).
- Click OK.

Then when I type 031401 in one of these cells, I get 12/20/85 instead of 03/14/01.

What else do I need to do?

ScottGem answered on 04/13/04:

Excel doesn't appear to support input masks in direct cell entries. You would probably need to create a form to enter the dates and then have the entered data stored in the cell. Probably more trouble then typing the 2 slashes.

Can Outlook Express send and recieve email by itself, without using an email program like hotmail or yahoo?

How do I configue Outlook Express to send and recieve email using an email provider like Hotmail?

Is it possible to use Express to send email and not download email mgs from my Hotmail?

ScottGem answered on 03/13/04:

Outlook Express is an email client. An e-mail client is a piece of software that is used to retrieve and manage mail. It will send and retrieve mail from POP3 or IMAP mailboxes. These are the standard mailboxes used on the Internet. In addition, OE, because its a Microsoft product, can be used as a client with Hotmail. I don't think it will work with any other web based mail (like Yahoo) unless they provide POP3 service.

Outlook is NOT an e-mail service in itself so it doesn't provide a mailbox. It has to be used with another e-mail service.

To configure OE, use Tools>Accounts and select properties for the account you want to configure.

Anyone know how I can manually fix a pdf photo file? I had saved one on a CD a while back, now I try to open and it keeps stating an "unpected end of file error" but one of the file icons on my desktop actually show the photo thumb, so I am assuming it is not totally corrupted. How can I fix such a file? It is important. In other words, is there a recover feature in adobe, or is there another program that can fix it? Thanks

ScottGem answered on 12/15/03:

Well first a PDf is not a photo. PDF is the Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format. It may contain a photo, but it not, in itself, a photo.

Second, the problem is not specific to the file format. The problem has to do with the File system (FAT, NTFS, etc.) so there is nothing specific to PDFs that wouild be needed here.

The problem is that the file is on a CD. Normally, the way to fix this is to run SCANDISK and hope that it can reconstruct the file sectors. Buit I don't know if SCANDISK can work on a CD. You might try a CD repair tool like Spin Doctor (this is a device, not software). You might also try copying the contents of the CD to your hard drive then running SCANDISK on the drive.

ScottGem answered on 12/15/03:

Depends on the program. some programs require the CD as a form of copy protection. When you install there may be an option to load all the files so you can run from your hard drive. You need to select that option. If the option is not offered, then it may not be available.

There are some utilities like V-Com's Virtual CD that allow you to copy the files from a Cd to your hard drive and use it like a CD.

Anyone know why my Photoshop 7 doesnt recognize any new fonts i installed? i put them in my windows font folder, in the PSFONTS folder, and also trued putting it in the common files folder of Adobe, not NOTHING makes PS7 recognize and use them... i know i used it before bec i created this psd with a new baskerville or something, and i also had about the same # of fonts as before, like a thousand or so using XP, and i know thats a lot, but again i had no prob using it before, and all of a sudden, after i had reinstalled XP for cleaning purposes, it says it needs a replacement for that font so whats going on? i dont think i put it anywhere but the windows fonts folder before... is it bec i onlt put the ttf's there, should u be putting all 3 formats, that pfb's and pfm's?

ScottGem answered on 11/10/03:

There are generally 2 types of fonts; True Type and Type 1. Type 1 is the original Postscript fonts that spurred the use of DTP. When Windows came out, Microsoft created their own True Type font format that has largely supplanted Type 1.

ANY font needs to be installed before Windows will recognize it. Just copying a True Type (TTF) font to the fonts folder is not always enough. To install a True Type font you need to open the Fonts folder from Control Panel and select File>Install new Font from the menu. Then find and select the font and it shoould be recognized by ANY Windows app.

Type 1 fonts (pfm & pfb) install differently. You need to have Adobe Type Manager (ATM) on your system and use that to install the fonts.

Question/Answer
luhayes asked on 11/03/03 - Purpose of Fast Save in Word

In Word 2002 what is the purpose of the Fast Save feature? Is it good to have it on?

ScottGem answered on 11/03/03:

The following is from the FAQ on Fast save at the MSKB:

SUMMARY
This article answers some of the most frequently asked questions about the Allow fast saves option in Microsoft Word for Windows.
MORE INFORMATION
Q: What is the difference between a fast saved file and a full saved file?

A: A fast saved file is a Word document in which the physical order of characters stored in the file does not match the logical order of characters in the document that the file represents. In other words, changes to the file are appended to the end of the file.

A full saved file is a Word document in which the physical order of characters stored in the file is identical to the logical order of characters in the document that the file represents. In other words, changes to the file are incorporated into the contents of the file in the specific location where the change was made.

NOTE: Files sizes can increase when the Allow fast saves option is turned on.
Q: How do I change the setting of the Allow fast saves option?

A: On the Tools menu, click Options. Then, on the Save tab, click to select or clear the Allow fast saves check box, and then click OK.

NOTE: By default, the Allow fast saves option is not selected in this version of Microsoft Word; however, the default setting is different in earlier versions of Word.
Q: When does Word perform a fast save?

A: When the Allow fast saves option is selected, Word may perform a fast save when you save changes to your document. When you click Save (or on the File menu, click Save), Word may perform a fast save or a full save of your document.
Q: When does Word perform a full save?

A: Word performs a full save of a document when any of the following events occur:
On the fifteenth (15th) fast save of a document. Word normally performs 14 fast save operations before it performs a full save.

-or-
When you click Save and there are many edits performed in the document.

NOTE: There is no way to determine or change the number of edits in a document. As changes are appended to the end of the physical document file, it reaches a point where the physical document needs to be re-written so that, once again, the changes to the file can be incorporated back into the contents of the file in the specific location where the changes were made.

-or-
When you click Save and the Allow fast saves option is not selected (turned off).

-or-
When you save the document in another format, such as Rich Text Format (RTF).
Q: Why should I let Word do a fast save?

A: If you select the Allow fast saves option, Word appends any changes to the end of the document file rather than re-writing the entire file. The Allow fast saves option thus takes less time than a full save of the document. The difference in time is only noticeable when you are working on very large documents.
Q: When should I not use the Allow fast saves option?

A: If you will be sharing a document containing sensitive information that has been deleted, you should force Word to do a full save of your document. To force Word to do a full save, turn off the Allow fast saves option, and then click Save.
For additional information, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

211209 WD2000: Opening Word Document in Text Editor Displays Deleted Text

Q: When I am working on a document from a network location, why does Word seem to take the same amount of time to save the document, regardless of how I have the Allow fast saves option set?

A: This functionality is by design. Fast saves cannot be performed over a network. If the Allow fast saves option is turned on, Word ignores this option when you save a document over a network.
Q: When I select the Always create backup copy option, why is the Allow fast saves option turned off?

A: A backup copy of a document cannot be saved (created) when Word fast saves a document. When you click to select the Always create backup copy option, Word automatically turns off the Allow fast saves option. Consequently, when you select Allow fast saves, Word automatically turns off the Always create backup copy option, if it is selected.
Q: What is the Allow background saves option?

A: This option saves documents in the background, so you can continue working in Word while you save (full save or fast save) a document. A pulsing disk icon appears in the status bar when Word is performing either a full save or a fast save in the background.

NOTE: The Allow background saves option is selected (turned on) by default in this version of Word; however, this option is turned off by default in earlier versions of Word.

Perhaps it's because I'm not used to their format and I don't like the busyness of the site, I wanted to keep O.E. but I was told O.E. is more susceptible to viruses, etc. In O.E., I could keep emails w/attachments in a file. Haven't figured out how to do that yet on this new site. Also, the Yahoo/SBC only gives 25 mb of space and O.E. was limitless.

Do you have any thoughts of the pros and cons? I was also told by SBC if I rec'd my email at O.E. and I traveled somewhere I couldn't retrieve my emails off of O.E.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ScottGem answered on 10/24/03:

I think you need to understand a little bit about the differences between e-mail clients. Outlook Express is a local e-mail client that resides on your local PC. It can retrieve mail from POP3 or IMAP servers on the Internet and download those e-mails to your local drive. This is why it appears limitless, but is limited by the amount of hard drive space you have available. There are also many WEB-based e-mail services, some of which also provide POP3 services as well. These services, store your mail on their servers so you can retrieve them from any WEB connected PC. However, they can't provide a limitless amount of storage space.

There is a happy medium where you leave e-mail on the server for a specified length of time. This allows you to check your mails while away from your computer, but still download the mails to your computer periodically.

Outlook, since its free and widely used, has been a target for malicious attacks. However, practicing safe computing, keeping your Windows up to date and using a good A/V program should keep you safe.

luhayes asked on 10/02/03 - Sorting in Excel

A large Excel file has both 5-digit and 9-digit zip codes.

A normal sort lists all 5-digit zip codes, followed by all 9-digit codes each group in numeric order.

Filtering can provide all 92123 entries, but doesn't include the 94103-#### group.

How do I get a list in order of the first five digits? For example, a printable list of everyone in zip code 94103?

ScottGem answered on 10/03/03:

Try filtering on 94103*, this should return all those with zipcodes starting with 94103.

i just installed a Matrox Millenium II pci video card but it is not being recongized by plug and play?
Everytime i start the pc it says that the display adapters are not configured correctly. I have an onboard video but only get 16 colors. Don't have the drivers for it cause the system went from Windows 95 to 98. Gateway says that there are no drivers for the onboard video for Win 98. But why can't plug and play detect my video card? It is enabled in the bios.

P.S. I installed the video driver for the video card but still only has 16 colors as an option.

ScottGem answered on 09/17/03:

The problem is the onboard video. You need to disable that before you install the new card. As long as the onboard video is enabled it will read that rather then the Matrox.

i have a gateway p133 pentium pc. Recently the hard drive went bad, so i replaced it with a better one. The pc works but a message tells me that the display adapter is not installed correctly. I know it needs video drivers. The video is built into the motherboard. The hard drive that came with the pc had Windows 95, and the hard drive that is in their now has Windows 98 SE. Gateway told me that the drivers were on the System cd and were foe Windows 95 only, and that there are no drivers for the onboard video for Windows 98.
The pc runs at 16 colors now. Does anyone know where I might be able to get video drivers for this onboard video for Windows 98? or do i have to now install a video card?

ScottGem answered on 09/15/03:

You can try zipping the file, but if its downloaded it probably is already compressed. However, most ZIP utilities will allow you to span multiple floppies if the file is too big for one.

ScottGem;
Just because you tried installing a newer version of Reader, and it said it would have to uninstall the older versions, does not mean it does the same thing with all computers.
I still have Versions 4, 5, and 6, on my computer, and it does use whichever version the particular site asks for.
You are a real pain.....simply because you assume so much that you don't really know for sure; and never give anyone credit.

ScottGem answered on 08/27/03:

I read this and when I got to the last line I had to laugh. Again, you attribute your own shortcomings to me. That is my problem with your responses as I have told you before. You don't read the questions carefully, you make assumptions, you guess at answers when you really should be asking for more info. All of these things frequently lead you to give misinformation or plain wrong answers.

Anyone who follows my answers (and doesn't have an axe to grind against me) will see that your description of my answers is totally off base. I rarely make assumptions about things I do not know. I try not to answer questions unless I'm sure of the answer.

Your response here shows your lack of knowledge. It shows you don't understand Associations or PDFs. If you have more than one version of the Acrobat Reader on your system its because you ignored the admonition to uninstall previous versions. this instruction is built into the Install routine and would be the same for all computers. The only reason it wouldn't do so, is if the older version was disabled so the install routine wouldn't detect it. Second, a file type can be associated ONLY with ONE application. Therefore PDF files can only be associated with ONE version of the Reader. So if you tried to open a PDF from a WEB site it would look in your Associations table and load the version associated with PDFs. The Association feature is part of all Windows versions. There is nothing inthat feature that allows for detecting what version a file is and then opening that version's application.

In your zeal to attack me, you have used an argument that goes against the way Windows functions and therefore is easily disproven. Nor is this the first time.

Give it up Fred! Every time you go against me, you lose more.

richardghole asked on 07/12/03 - Managing Email

Hi

I have some questions about email that could help a lot of people if we could find these things.
I have been using Netscape Email 4.78 and older versions for years and they do have some problems. Do you know of an email program that will allow me to address the following? I could stay with Netscape or I could use another email program if I can address point 2 below.

Would the newer email (Netscape 7) or ones about to be released have any of the following features or do you know of an email program that would? Do you know of any email program or software that does point 3 below which would make email much more efficient?

1. If text is highlighted and copied from Netscape into other documents such as Microsoft Word the line breaks before the edge of the page in Microsoft Word. If text from Netscape is pasted into Microsoft Word, Word assumes that every new line in Netscape is a line break and if a spell check is ran in Word it will ask you to capitalize the beginning of each line. Pasting from Netscape to other programs often looks untidy. Outlook Express or Internet Explorer does not seem to have this problem and text from those programs can be pasted into Netscape fine. Also sometimes in Netscape email when a message is resent the words are not wrapped properly and unwanted paragraph or line breaks can appear on the recipients email.

2. You cannot change from Netscape to Outlook Express without losing some data in importing as far as I know. I have tried to import my Netscape email into Outlook Express but the marking indicating the message has been replied to or forwarded disappears. If I import to Outlook Express I will not know which messages I have replied to in the past. Also the flags are lost. I would be good if either Netscape or Microsoft solved this problem.

3. I am not sure if this feature is on any email program but it would be good if each of the emails in the sent messages folder were automatically marked indicating if the person who they were sent to had replied. So many people do not reply and email does go astray so I would like to be able to resend email to the people who have not replied. At the moment it is very time consuming to work out who has not replied. I prefer not to use a return receipt because if someone sends one it does not mean to say that they have properly read the email. They may have sent the receipt and then forgotten about it.

Alternatively it would be good if there was a program which automatically resent emails to only the people who have not replied every so often or whenever it is activated. It would be best if it only resent emails to selected people where it is important they reply. This could be separate software to the email program. Do you know of such a thing? The benefits would be enormous because most people do not reply. Resending them the email would increase the chance of them receiving it or replying to it.

Do you know if and when anyone will be adding the above features or do you know of a way to do them?

Your help will be appreciated
Regards Richard.

ScottGem answered on 07/10/03:

Outlook works differently then Outlook Express in managing multiple e-mail accounts. Where OE allows you to create multiple identities, each with their own Inbox, Outbox, etc., Outlook has one set of personal folders and everything goes into there (I prefer this). If you want to send mail from a different account, just use the Account pull down to select the account.

In AOL how do I change settings so I can click on a URL in an email message and have that Website open for me?

ScottGem answered on 06/25/03:

I think Rose misunderstood the question. The instructions she gave you are for SENDING a link in mail. I interpreted your question as referring to mail you had received.

In that case, there is nothing you can do. This is determined by the sender and/or their e-mail service. Unless they made the URL clickable when they composed the mail, then it will not be clickable. Its also possible that their e-mail service stripped out the HTML before sending, eliminating the clickable property.

The simple answer is to copy and paste the URL into the navigation window.

I have Roadrunner/TimeWarner cable, Windows 2000, and Juno Platinum email.

I've spent 2 weeks on and off trying to configure Outlook Express, because Juno only lets you keep a limited number of emails in folders.

There is too much cross talk between Juno, Outlook, and Roadrunner. Every time I try to send a web link to a friend, roadrunner pops up with my roadrunner address, even though I've told Explorer to use my Juno address as default.

What do you suggest?

ScottGem answered on 06/01/03:

Roadrunner pops up where? Explorer is a browser, not an e-mail app. so what you tell Explorer as the default e-mail shouldn't matter. If you have set Outlook Espress as your default e-mail client, then you set your default e-mail account there. If you go to send new mail, then it should default to that e-mail address.

How different are the different versions of Linux (Red Hat, Mandrake, etc.) Which is the best? I am a beginner but want to use Linux on my home PC.

ScottGem answered on 05/16/03:

You first need to understand some things about Linux. Red Hat, Mandrake, etc. are NOT versions of Linux. Linux is an Open Source OS, which means anyone can write their own extensions to it and even modify the code itself. It also means its free for anyone who wants it.

What Red Hat, Mandrake, etc. have done is take Linux and put together their own package of installer and interfaces to make it easier to use. If you just want to install Linux, you can download it for free from linux.org.

As to which package is best, best is a relative term. I would suggest searching the WEB for reviews on the various Linux loaders.

I'm curious as to why (as a beginner) you want to install Linux? While there are some good reasons to do so, they aren't compelling, especially for a beginner.

DILLIGAS asked on 03/12/03 - Excel formula

I need to create a spreadsheet in MS Excel 2002 to track sales for a plan that I am helping out with. The plan pays in tiers, so that the break is as follow:
1 – 25 $10.00/Per Member
26 – 50 $7.50/Per Member
51 – 75 $5.00/Per Member
76 – Plus $2.50/Per Member

So if there at 76 members the pay scale would be:
25 * $10.00 = $250.00
24 * $7.50 = $180.00
24 * $5.00 = $120.00
1 * $2.50 = $2.50

Is there and easy way or simple formula to create that could take the total of a number, break it down to the components that are needed to do the calculation?

76 2.5 550

=VLOOKUP(A10,A1:C4,3)+(VLOOKUP(A10,A1:C4,2)*(A10-VLOOKUP(A10,A1:C4,1)+1))

This formula would be in B10 with the number of members in A10 and the lookup table in A1:C4. The first part takes the aggregate total from the third column (550). The second part takes the per member rate from the 2nd column (2.5). The last part calculate the product as the number in A10 -the threshold + 1.

Testing this formula got the following results for the numbers in A10:

60=480
32=302.5
15=150
84=572.5

We would like to be able to demonstrate a Healthcare/Medical Application using a Wireless Devise (i.e. PDA or Tablet) and/to a Laptop.

The PDA or Tablet will be running WINDOWS CE
and the Laptop will be running WINDOWS XP PRO.

So, the question is:

Will thses two OS's talk to one another...

Can we send Data from the WINDOWS CE PDA or TABLET
for receipt by the Laptop which runs on WINDOWS XP PRO?

This is how we want to demonstrate our Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) System to Hospitals, Physicians, Nurses and Pharmacists.

We need to be able to show that their mobile, wireless devices (like PDA's) can work and transfer data to the main system (in this case the Laptop) running Windows XP PRO.

shades1p1p` asked on 02/15/03 - Media Player

I downloaded Sounth park.avi and widnows media won't let me play it a long with all my other movies that i downloaded (fast and furiouis, forest gump) Is there a media program that I can download so I can play this file?

ScottGem answered on 02/15/03:

The issue is probably that you don't have the correct codecs for media player. You have to get them from Microsoft or divx.

But I must add a caution here. All the movies you mentioned, in fact almost all commercial movies, are under copyright protection. It is illegal to make copies of such material without permission. Therefore, if you did not already purchase a copy of these items, then it would be illegal for you to download them without paying.

ScottGem answered on 02/13/03:

Better is a relative term. It depends on your needs. I have both (they are free so why not)? However I tend to use yahoo more. In fact, the only reason I have a hotmail name is because of Microsoft's Passport.

I actually have more then a dozen e-mail addresses, most of which use rarely. I use iwon.com when I'm shopping because of theit spam fighting stuff. I use Yahoo, because I also use Yahoo messenger and Hotmail for the afore mentioned reason. I have accounts at AOL and with my cable ISP (that's the ones I use most). I also have e-mail from my employer and side business.

I use a free utility called eprompter eprompter.com that polls all my pop3 mailboxes, plus AOL, Yahoo and Hotmail. So I can be notified when I receive mail within 15 minutes.

NT2001 asked on 02/11/03 - quality

Hello, would you please answer this question for me. Thank you!

Software quality is most critical in software engineering:
1) How would you characterize good quality software? What are the major elements of good software?

2) How do users and developers view quality and what is the relationship between their criteria?

3) What were the influential factors that changed the view and the practice of engineering high quality software in the last decade or so?

ScottGem answered on 02/11/03:

Now this I will answer. It shows you did the work and are just looking for help. It looks like a good job, but there are a couple of points I think you missed.

First, you have to realize that any software has a purpose. Most software is not shrinkwrapped packages like Microsoft Office. Most are custom built apps that are designed to fulfill a business purpose. Therefore, the prime factor, in my opinion, is usefulness and/or usability. Unless a piece of software is easy to use and accomplishes its purpose none of the other things you mention really matter.

This is where most developers differ from end users. Developers tend to work from the angle of efficient code, while users tend to look for ease of use.

What's wrong with your ISP's e-mail? Most web based services are not offering POP3 mail for free. Which eliminates being able to use Outlook.

Be resigned that the free ride on the WEB is ending. Little by little free services are disappearing or being scaled back. It costs money to run a server and that cost has to be covered.

I was very surprised to discover the other day that using Nero I was able to copy/burn a 715 meg file unto a 700 meg CD-R (Imation, I think). How is this possible, and just how many megs can a supposedly 700 meg CD-R store?

ScottGem answered on 01/30/03:

I think the answer may lie in cluster sizing. A cluster is the minimum amount of space a file will occupy on a disk. Cluster sizes on hard drives are much larger then for CDs. So files that might occupy 715M on the hard drive, may not take up as much space on the disk.

But T-Bolt has a point about ruining disks by trying to fit too much. I would ZIP the file first.

I wrote a letter using Word 2002 in Office XP about a week ago. Today when I opened the file (letter) to read it, the date was updated with TODAY's date. I do not want it to keep updated the date--I want the original date that I wrote the letter to remain on the document. I keep trying to change the date to last weeks date--I am also unchecking the box in the "insert date" menu, but after I close the document, it still updates the date to the current date. Am I doing something wrong? How can I correct this problem?

ScottGem answered on 01/02/03:

When you insert a date in Word you have a couple of choices. One is to insert a Date Field, the other is to insert the current date (I'm not sure of the exact wording, don't have word 2K on this machine). What you did was insert a Date Field which will always pick up the current date. You can see this, by use the View Field Codes option. Delete the Field code and either type in or insert a static date.

What do I need to do to get into my downloaded zip files, and convert the ones that are in Adobe into something that I can actually use. Thanks, Dan

ScottGem answered on 12/20/02:

The files are not going "into" Acrobat. What I suspect is happening is you have changed the association for Zip files to Acrobat so that when you double click a Zip file Acrobat is launched.

What I suggest you do is go to Start>Help and lookup Association. The Help will explain what this very powerful feature of Windows is and how to change the association to whatever Zip utility you use.

Alternatively, you can launch your Zip utility and use File>Open to extract the Zips.

Greetings and 2nd SOS to all experts,

I have a very large number of Word documents, which all have the same structure except its body which is in the middle of each Word when opened. The above and lower portion beyond the word is constant. Besides there are two specific and different lines, just above and below the main body of each Word.

Is there a very good and user-friendly software which can delete the portion just above and below the two specific, but different lines in each of the large number of Word documents I have ? The two ways are possible, either to delete the specific portions beyond the two specific, but different lines or to cut out within the two specific, but different lines and form separate Word documents for each Word I have. It would be the best if there is an as such batch editting software to be converted by folder-basis than file basis for each Word.

It would be of immense convenience to me if you could please help me and I would remain genuinely thankful to you.

Warm regards,
>>>kreditme<<<

ScottGem answered on 12/07/02:

First, it is really NOT necessary to spam the boards with the same question. The way Answerway is structured most experts will see new questions. Second, when posting you should use categories that specifically pertain to your theme. Of the 5 or 6 copies of this note that you posted only this one is in an appropriate category. ALL the others are not in the right places. Only the Software and Microsoft Applications categories are applicable to your question.

As for your question, as I understand it, you are trying to edit out the the lines above and below a line with a specific word. If that's the case, you would need to write a VBA macro that would search thru document to do this. I don't know of or beleive there is any software to do this.

I vote with Barb. There used to be a few font management programs. But most dropped out of the market. Adobe bought up what I think was the best one.

The single advantage of a font manager is that it allows you to group fonts by function and then activiate or deactivate the group when needed or not needed. This saves resources, especially under Win 9x.

j3101 asked on 12/03/02 - Problems copying a data CD to another PC.

I have 2 Pc's. I use the second as a backup. I just burned a copy of my data files to a CD and copied them from my main PC to the 2nd PC. I checked a couple files on the 2nd PC to see if the CD copied over. (I have hundreds of files. I just spot- checked a few of the newer ones I have added.) A couple of the newer ones copied to the second PC, but a number of them didn't.

I checked the CD to see if it had the newest files. It does.

(The data is all Word Perfect files. Both PC's are compatible. They're from the same company.)

What might cause this problem?

This has happened before. It can't be the new files. They're like hundreds that did copy over successfully.

I use Roxio's ECDC creator version 5 or thereabouts for copying files. It has always worked well.
Thanks

ScottGem answered on 12/05/02:

We would need to know EXACTLY what you did to copy the files in each direction. since the files are on the CD, then that part seemed to go OK. On the other end you should simply drag and drop from the CD to the hard drive.

If you used a CD/R to burn the files, then the files will be read only on your hard drive.

Question/Answer
j3101 asked on 11/30/02 - Word Perfect's Edit/Find/Replace may have caused this problem

I currently have a question about the problem (stated below) into the Corel Newsgroup, but I've only received one answer and it won't solve the problem, as I understand it. The answer explained how to work around it.

I copied some text from the Internet to WP. (I have done this countless times without any problems and over a lot of years.) The pasted text came in with double quotes on all contractions. I used the Find/Replace feature in the Edit menu to correct all the misspellings. Now, I simply can't type any document (whether it's my own or pasted) using the word *I* without getting *I'd*.

(eg. *I'd* was written as *I"d*. This was the case with all
contractions.)

Does anyone know anything about how this might of happened or how I might correct it.

An expert on the Corel site told me to copy and paste using the feature "special paste" in WP. That won't solve my problem. He also suggested that I write a macro. I think I wrote them in WP 5.1 about 9 years ago. I have no idea how to do that now. I don't know if the macro will solve my problem. I have a question into the expert there, but I thought someone here might know something too.
Thanks for any insight or help.

ScottGem answered on 11/30/02:

Been a while since I worked with WP so this is just a guess. But I would look for something like an Auto complete or glossary feature. Such a feature would cause typing one thing to be expanded into something else.

Hi

I was reformatting a drive during the reinstallion of my OS, the machine crashed and has left me in DOS unable to boot to my now non excisting OS. How can I install a OS or get the CD-ROM to operate.

TIA

ScottGem answered on 11/30/02:

Either you need to set your CMOS to boot from CD/ROM or you need a bootable floppy with your CD/ROM drivers on it. To set the PC to boot from CD/ROM, as you boot you will see a message to press something to enter Setup. Press that something and look for a boot sequence. Set it to CD/ROM first.

If you can't boot from CD, then you need a bootable floppy with the CD drivers on it. You may have gotten such a floppy with your PC, usually labeled Windows Startup Disk. You should not have tried reformatting without such a disk. If you don't have one, you should be able to create one at www.bootdisk.com.

curiousz asked on 11/27/02 - Photoshop 7 / Font Manager Query

Hello, I was wondering how can I implement all the fonts in my Adobe Font manager into Photoshop, as well as my other XP apps? Is it as simple as copying and pasting all the fonts into my win/fonts folder? Or is there some way I can keep them in Adobe font manager and somehow "import" or "refer" to them when I want? Because frankly it would be a hassle to go through 900 fonts everytime I want to pick one too.... thanks

ScottGem answered on 11/28/02:

Need to start this with a discussion of fonts. There are basically two types of fonts that can be used. Before Windows, there was only Type 1 (Postscript) fonts. These are still used especially on MACs. With Windows, Microsoft introduced True Type fonts which have largely supplanted Type 1 fonts.

To install True Type fonts in Windows, you go to the Fonts folder in Control Panel and select File>Install New Fonts. Once installed these fonts should be available to ALL Windows apps.

To install Type 1 fonts you need Adobe Type Manager (ATM). Been a while since I worked with ATM so I'm not sure of the exact installation procedure. But the same holds true, that once installed they will be avaialble to ALL Windows apps.

There are Font Managers that will allow you to create font groups that you can turn on or off as needed so you don't clutter up the font list. I'm not sure if Adobe Font Manager has this feature or not. If its the program I think it is, then it should.

Hope this helps,

luhayes asked on 11/22/02 - Low memory message

I have been working on an example of a brochure in Publisher 2002 (Win XP) and when I go to edit, I get a message that says "Windows is low on memory. To free up memory, save your work and close other porgrams, then continure working." I have done that, and I have deleted pictures, checked the disk and defragged and it hasn't helped. Any ideas?

ScottGem answered on 11/23/02:

The message you are getting has nothing to do with hard drive space so deleting pictures won't help. A Low memory message refers to RAM. Graphics work like Publisher does use lots of RAM. If you have a lot of pics and graphics it could cause problems, especially if you don't have a lot of RAM. So the question is how much RAM do you have?

luhayes asked on 11/20/02 - Missing file cctrust.dll

When I installed Norton Firewall 2003 on my PC (running Windows 98), I got an error message about a missing file -- CCTRUST.DLL. A search on google and yahoo both pointed to Symantec. Went to Symantec website but search there found nothing. It sounds like a bad joke -- I've lost a file that I don't know what it does and I don't know how to find it. Do I even need the file? If so, where can I find it?

ScottGem answered on 11/21/02:

Did you try e-mailing Symantec? There are also public forums on their site where you can ask questions.

Did you try uninstalling NPF and then reinstalling? Make sure you disable your anti-virus and close all running apps before you try installing.

Hi, In word XP, every time i press the space bar, instead of a space a dot appears... how can i change this? by the way - While the dots appear on the screen, when i print the document they dissapear.

ScottGem answered on 11/15/02:

You have Word set to display hidden characters. This is set under Tools>Options. You can choose to show all hidden characters or just some. I prefer to show paragraph marks and tabs but spaces is overkill.

There is also an icon on the toolbar that looks like the paragraph (¶) symbol which toggles show hidden characters on and off.

Note, these characters are for display only and do not print.

is there a macro that can do a function like this. If in Sheet 1 cell A3 = "TB" than do nothing If in Sheet 1 cell A3 = "a date" than in this Sheet 2 hide all rows that equal "$0.00"

ScottGem answered on 11/13/02:

You can do it but it would require some coding. probably best to create a filter, then kick off that filter as a result of the value of A3.

When I tried to install a newer verison of RealPlayer, I got a message that I first had to uninstall the old one. I was unable to find it in the Add/Delete Programs (Win 98). Ideas?

ScottGem answered on 11/13/02:

Check the Real Player folder (probably Program FilesReal) and see if there is an uninstall file there. If not try looking for a Help link at real.com.

Is there a way were i can print more than one sheet in excel, all in the same file. I want to be able to press a function button and print the worksheets with watever functions they have been preset to print, but not have to go to each sheet and hit print.

ScottGem answered on 11/13/02:

You can do this with a macro that will set the print area, send the output to the printer then go to the next print area. You can record the macro from the Tools>Macro menu. Do it once manually then you can replay the macro when needed.

janice_2k asked on 10/23/02 - Access SOS

Dear Experts, How can i overwrite the data in table in MS Access once I import the spreadsheet to existing table in Access? Ive tried to import the spreadsheet (Excel) to the table that I have created (with data) in Access. It didnt overwrite the existing one but only accumulate and add data on the table. This caused the file size of my table to be increased as time pass. If I delete the tables and reimport the new data, it prompts me to delete all the relationships i have created earlier. this is very cumbersome and time consuming. What are the best alternatives and solution to these problems? Please reply ASAP as the clock is ticking. Thank you so much and have a nice day!

ScottGem answered on 10/24/02:

You need to delete the table (or all its records) first. If you are using the TransferSpreadsheet method in code, then create a Delete query and run that first to clean out the table before importing.

Hope this helps,
Scott<>
