Question/Answer
DILLIGAS asked on 02/04/04 - Client needs to track site visits and page hits

I have a client that would like to see:
How many hits
How many are unique
where they come from
where they go when leaving
what products they are viewing
what products are generating the most traffic
what counters the viewers are coming from
what computer, display, ODS, etc they are using.

Can anyone turn me on to a simple resellable or purchasable utility that will help out here.

The site is a Storefront package, SQL, hosted on Laggard servers.

I have some access but not much to the site. Mainly I am reselling the services of a web designer.

All information is welcome.

Thanks

DILLIGAS

stinkface asked on 05/15/03 - Good Software for tracking

What is some good software for tracking web site traffic and finding out what kind of traffic you are geeting, where it was refered from and search engine placement? I am basically looking for an all in one tool that will allow me to do everything. Thanks

Bubbels answered on 05/15/03:

I recommend the service I use for my site, ExtremeTracking. You can click here to view my stats to see the type of statistics you'll have access to: http://extremetracking.com/open?login=bubbels. And this service is absolutely free. There's a link to sign up at the top of the page, and all you do is copy and paste the code they give you!

Question/Answer
stinkface asked on 04/28/03 - Follow-up on DMOZ

I think that I asked the wrong question about dmoz. I have a site that does not fit into one of their catagories, it spans a few, yet has one home url with different pages. For example: www.mysite.com/cars.html and www.mysite.com/boats.html. Can I subit those individual pages to each catagory or can I only submit www.mysite.com? I have heard conflicting answers to this question so I was wondering if anyone knew what the real deal was. Thanks for your time

Bubbels answered on 04/28/03:

According to their submission guidelines, you cannot submit subpages of the same domain separately to DMOZ. This will be considered spamming and could potentially get your site banned.

Ideally, you should create separate websites for totally unrelated subjects under different domains. However, if you would prefer to keep unrelated subjects together on one site, then your only option is to include keywords relevant to all subject matter at your site in your home page title, description, and keywords metatags and try your darndest to find the most general category possible to submit it under. I don't think the category will play that significant a role in your ability to get visitors from searches, as when searches are performed at any search engine that uses DMOZ, direct links to your subpages will appear depending on the search terms used. You goal here is to get your domain "in the system", so to speak. You just want to be sure it is indeed a relevant category, so you can be considered for inclusion.

In your case, if your site is indeed about cars, boats, and other outdoor activities, you could submit under the following general category:

http://www.dmoz.com/Home/Consumer_Information/Sports_and_Recreation/

Hope this helps!

Question/Answer
stinkface asked on 04/22/03 - DMOZ, The Open Directory Project

I need some info on submitting a website to DMOZ, the open directory project. I have a site that does not really fit into one catagory and I have read that you can only submit one line (like www.mysite.com) and not another page in the site (like www.mysitesports.com and www.mysitecars.com). Is this true? also any tips on getting listed with them that you can provide to get listing would be wonderful. Thanks

Bubbels answered on 04/23/03:

Besides the excellent advice you've already received, there are some things you can do to help ensure that your site gets listed. Your site should contain some valuable content. A site with only links or ads probably won't make it. No under construction pages or broken text or image links. An optimized set of metatags. Using your keywords high up in the textual content on your home page. Getting other sites to link to you to increase your "site popularity." I have an entire section of my website dedicated to helping others to optimize their site for not only getting listed in DMOZ, Google, and the other major search engines and directories, but also achieving a fairly high ranking, including free online tools that you are welcome to use. My site is listed in DMOZ, and I've managed to achieve a #1 and #2 ranking in Google for many of my keywords and key phrases by using the techniques I describe in the site promotion section of my site, and I've never spent a penny doing it. Here's the link: http://www.creatingonline.com/sitepromotion.htm. Check it out when you have time. And good luck to you!
